Many people wait until spring when the weeds come up to remind them the job should be done, only tofind that the chemical they want to use should have been applied in the fall. Most products used in ditches, on ditch banks and along fence rows are soil sterilants, which are injurious to most crops. They may kill all plants for several years. Fall Reversible Orange to Brown VESTS Down Filled treatment, after irrigation water has been taken out of the ditch for the season, insures that no harmful residues will be washed onto the fields and gives the winter precipitation a chance tocarry the chemical into the ground where it will enter the root system of the weeds and grasses that are to be killed. Three products commonly used in ditches, onditchbanks or along fence rows are Monu-ro- n, Diuron and Atrazine. If your ditch has a steep slope, treating with these products may cause erosion. Atrazine is not cleared for use below water level in ditches. Follow the manufacturers directions on the label anytime you use a chemical weed killer.
