Sevier County Commissioners unaniIn a mously voted to suspend efforts to obtain grants from the Economic Development Administration and the Four Corners Commission for the construction of an Industrial park In Sevier County. The decision came after several months of investigation and meetings with state and federal officials, and after having exhausted what seem to be the various possibilities at this time. The obstacle which ultimately proved insurmountable and which principally precipitated the decision by the commission, was the Inability to attract sufficient tenants who were committed to construct businesses or Industries on the industrial park site. During the period of investigation there was talk of livestock, meat processing, turkey processing, dairy and other related Industries locating In the Industrial park, but at length only one tenant seemed committed to proceed, and then the nature of that commitment became somewhat obscured. Initially, It was Intended that eighty percent of the cost of establishing the Industrial park would be borne by federal assistance and that the remaining twenty percent would be Alvin A. Brown Funeral Held borne by the tenants who would locate on the park. Some weeks ago the county entered into a statement of Intent with Abe Guss, owner and operator of a meat packing industry In Northern Utah, under which Mr. Guss would havesuppliedacon-slderabl- e portion of the twenty percent matching fund requirement. When it became somewhat clear that other tenants were not on the horizon, at least Immediately so, then Mr. Guss became reluctant to proceed as the only tenant. The cost of maintaining and operating the industrial park was, perhaps, a more Important consideration than the Initial matching fund cost. When all the facts and Information were sifted and condensed, the remaining question was simple: Should the county come up with the twenty percent matching fund out of Its pocket? In response. Commission Chairman Dean Nielsen made the following statement: Though we are acutely aware of the economic needs of Sevier County as well as the surrounding counties, we cannot In good conscience spend tax dollars with so limited insurance of success. This does not mean that at some future time the proposal would not be sound. i This sign voiced the opinion of those attending the meeting on the proposed Highway 59 going through Salina. Wilson and Mr. Jensen, and Sen. Harward spoke In favor of the highway and stated they felt that the State Engineers had done a good job and that the highway was well planned. Several townspeople voiced problems that the proposed highway would bring, but all were still in favor of the highway going Salina. through There were no objections raised from the 80 or more people In attendance. This Is only a preliminary hearing and another hearing may be held when the exact plans are finalized.
