eighth grade exercises at opera house this week marks the close of another successful public school year an air of cheer and festivity pervades the atmosphere of the students who have tolled upwards through another grade and by the aid of their excellent and dearly beloved teachers gained a prominence where the further acquisition of knowledge assumes a more fascinating form when the schools opened last fall teachers and students alike were strangers to each other but that Is all changed now teachers have learned to know mild and love the tender lender minds In trusted to their care and have been delighted with the responsiveness exhibited by tite the students still there Is a vein of sadness running through the outward t heer that modifies the whole it Is the parting ties of friendship have been formed that in very many in stance swill endure through life teachers will turn their attention to other things students will scatter to their various homes and there will never be just the same names answer j roia cali when another season elway more or less sad but there there Is to too 0 a certain satisfaction in them they give an opportunity tor for an expression of the heart it is here that we wish to assure our friends of the schools teachers and students alike that we are in hearty sympathy with the noble work they are doing we would encourage the teachers to continued diligence and the students to greater efforts we regard the profession of teaching as among the very noblest and we feel to applaud the earnest seeker after truth and knowledge with this brief preface we will enter upon our report of the weeks doings in last friday evening the eighth grade students were the guests of honor at the high school function given in the whittier block the entertainment was arranged by the teachers and students of the high school primarily as a love feast trial marking k the close of this years school season the rooms were beautifully decorated with the school colors purple and white and with flags and chinese lanterns entertainment began with hearty good natured conversation after which games were played and a short program rendered the program consisted of an address of welcome by wilford andersen history of the classey class by jennie hunsaker by zera wilde A poem composed by rose hose smith was read by auretta peters the affair closed after tile the serving of dainty refreshments the exe ang was a very pleasant one and reflects credit upon those who had the exercises in hand the program wits was especially good and we were given the privilege of reproducing a couple of the articles that were read that Is the history of the class of 09 and the prognostic prognostication aaion they follow herewith the history of the 09 class our class was organized sept IS 18 1903 with an enrollment of 38 pupils prof T 11 II glenn as instructor of physical geography and german mr H E larsen instructor of algebra and miss lyla knudson instructor of english history civics and geometry after school had been in session a few weeks we decided to select school and class colors so after several flays of discussion purple and white were chosen as school colors a change from the red and white while the former colors this change was made because the colors odthe of the state niver U sity are red and white As the 09 class is THE high school it was decided to wear purple and white this year and choose class colors next year we had no sooner donned our colors and floated our flag than we were met with direct opposition from the eighth grade who had the audacity to think that because they were granted the privilege of occupying part of our building they should also hoist their green and red flag and so EO ensued a great fla flag rush the first in the history of the school naturally it caused much excitement in our little city but it also afforded the greatest of pleasure for the 09 class when we finally succeeded after a hard struggle ie in keeping our flag on the bull building we are sorry to say that our school at first was quite disorderly but the simple reason was we did not have enough teachers to look after us but but after another long discussion and hard planning on the part of the teachers it was decided to organize the two schools into a school city this arrangement proved very satisfactory however we hope to have more teachers next year so that students will not be troubled with peace officers after we had become strongly organized gani zed we paraded the streets in hayracks harracks hay racks decorated with purple and white this was done to make known to the people that there really existed 3 a high school and one that will win recognition I 1 in the state of utah and in time become one of the foremost schools of the west we have given three dances for the purpose of obtaining money for the library bra ra iad wila saul in our W work ork also a committee was appointed to obtain subscriptions from the business men and through numerous liberal donations we were able to pur purchase clase enough books to carry on the work in the history and science departments altogether we now have about lo ol lumes unies we are pleased to make special mention of the liberal donation of the eighth grade which was a fine set of dickens works we thank them for supporting us at this time and trust they will be permitted to enjoy them as much as we have A few exciting incidents have occurred I 1 during the year the most important taking place the of february when the students went on a strike the 2 2nd and being a holiday we felt it an injustice to think that prof glenn should ask us to return to school the next day as it etwas was r friday ri so on the we held a big mass meeting and decided to remain away on the friday morning came and the teachers were in their places but imagine their dismay when they found all seats vacant except one and this one had to sn sneak eak through the eighth grade lines in order to get in the building of course he was proclaimed the liero hero of the day by the teachers but that was not our opinion this affair Is the most disgraceful in tile the h history IS tory of our claas for we do not know yet the extent of the offense given to our teachers and trustees however after obtaining excuses from mammas and papas we were allowed to reenter school excuses were considered not sufficient by the members of our class sowe so we all made our apoll agles to the teachers and trustees and promised never to do the like again as we do hereby admit that it was a very dishonorable net ac and unbecoming to the class of 09 school has gone on very smoothly since this event so you may judge whether or not noe we have regretted our past misdemeanors arbor lay day was observed vea with the ibe usual ceremony of planting trees and cleaning up grounds however our services were given to the central school as our grounds were tree free from the usual disorder the physical phy geography class on page two CLOSING EXERCISES continued from first page der prot prof glenn has done much ren research work and have studied carefully their surroundings the algebra class feel that they have gained much under the careful instruction of mr larsen the classes in english have done good work and the improvement pro made is wonderful we have studied several good classics and have become deeper thinkers as a result the the history and civics classes have covered a large field of work and have the honor of being the strongest class in the school with the he exception of the german class for they can rattle off german history beyond our ken and besides they can say things that we history students cant understand of course this is all due to prof glenn and that fact alone makes us proud of our german class A few weeks ago miss misi knudson Kni ldson entertained her history class at her home where they recited their les son in the usual manner and then had the pleasure of examining miss knud sons historical treasures refreshments were served and the history class certainly had an enjoyable as well as an instructive afternoon naturally tile the german class did not wish to be behind cothey gave a german supper all invited were were supposed to talk nothing but german however we dont know whether they succeeded or not but from all reports they must have had a thoroughly gernan german time last but not least was the reception given by ass knudson may alay 16 in honor of our track team it war wa glorious to see our beautiful colors float artistically in every room and the entertainment was a grand ending for a happy and successful school year r i one little incident happened to mar the pleasure of the evening semeona onu stole tile the B 13 C H S flag and tearing it to pieces scattered it about the town but with the help of our future class mates we hope to instill instill enogh reNe reverence rence in the hearts heart of 0 everyone to protect at least our flags and eventually produce a strong loyalty a ky for the brigham city high school JENNIE JENIE HUNSAKER 0 prognostication 0 on it t the he eighth school on the of february 1906 we also persuaded others to be equally considerate by mounting our horses and driving the hardhearted hard hearted students back ZERA WILDE the entertainment given in the opera house last saturday evening by ay the eighth grade students was a delightful affair the house was well filled and the students who took part in the program neatly and tastefully dressed made teachers and the students for the able fork done and the excellent entertainment given those who attended the exercises As we were constrained to reproduce a couple of the exercises given by the high school students we were equally impressed with the excellence of their counterparts in the eighth grade exercises and through the courtesy of the authors we give herewith the articles resistance the
