If some 40 businessmen and fruit growers have their way, everyone traveling through northern Utah will know. Fruitway is the designation these growers and businessmen in the Perry and Willard area have given SR-8the major highway through the south end of Box Elder county was completed just to the before west. With the freeway came a drastic reduction in traffic and with that a severe loss of business. The businessmen and growers, hoping to stimulate traffic along the old highway once again, will advertise their wares using highway signs along Tim Francis, a member of the TIM FRANCIS receives a $500 check on behalf of the Fruitway Promotional council from Sandra Ferguson of Golden Spike Empire, Inc. In the background are the orchards that make the Perry and Willard 'Fruitway' famous. Swine disease causing industry concern in Utah Concern about the disease a growing pseudorabies threat to the swine industry was voiced recently by Dr. F. James Schoenfeld, state veterinarian and director of the Division of Animal Industry, Utah State Department of Agriculture. Dr. Schoenfeld said, The incidence of pseudorabies in swine has increased dramatically in recent years. A U. S. Department of Agriculture sur- vey of disgnostic laboratories which deals in animal and poultry health problems across the nation indicated that 714 cases of pseudorabies were confirmed in the U. S. in 1976, compared with 225 in 1975 and the first year interstate rules were in effect. After that, such swine could be moved only from states that required reporting of suspected or confirmed cases and placed them under quarantine. The years delay would allow states time to enact necessary laws or regulations. . Without Restriction Livestock other than swine not known to be infected-witor exposed to pseudorabies could be moved interstate without restriction. The proposed regulations also would require thorough cleaning and disinfecting Fruitway Promotional council formed to attract tourists, said the council is near a point the signs soon will be placed in Pleasant View and west of Brigham City. Theyll cost about $3,600, he said, with the council members picking up about $3,100 of the tab. Golden Spike Empire, Inc., the northern Utah promotional body based in Ogden, has handed the council $500 to help defray costs, in addition. A check for that amount was given to Francis this week by Sandra Ferguson, a Golden Spike Empire official. The signs will be 10 by 20 feet and stand eight feet above the ground. Theyll carry the legend, Utahs Famous Fruit Way with a road map showing travelers the easiest way to reach the business. The sign will also list services available. Adcraft of Ogden can have the signs erected within two weeks, Francis said, as soon as the promotional council gives its go ahead. The council, however, has not yet received all the necessary funds from members, Francis added. He said the council wants to get the signs erected as quickly as possible, since the peak season July and August is at hand. Tremonton City has also been involved in obtaining sites for two signs outlining its services. As a stipulation for obtaining Golden Spike Empire funds, the Fruitway signs will carry the Golden Spike Empire logo, Francis said. No federally approved vaccine is available against pseudorabies, but permission has been granted by the U. S. Department of Agriculture for field trials of experimental vaccine, he said. Mad Itch Pseudorabies, also known as Aujeszkis disease or mad itch is caused by a herpes virus, which may cause death losses of up to 100 percent in pigs less than two weeks old. After three weeks of age, young pigs usually develop some resistance to the disease and losses are considerably reduced. Since pseudorabies can occur in adult swine with few, if any, visible symptoms, hogs serve as a natural reservoir for the disease. In swine, pseudorabies can cause sows to abort or produce stillborn or mummified pigs. In baby pigs, pseudorabies may cause sudden death with few if any clinical signs. More often, death is preceded by fever, which may exceed 105 degrees, dullness, loss of appetite, vomiting, weakness, lack of coordination, and convul- . sions. Swine can transmit pseudorabies to cattle and sheep, where itxauses a fatal encephalomyelitis with signs of severe itching and self mutilation hence, The the name mad itch. disease also affects dogs and cats and wildlife. Pseudorabies is not known to affect humans. The state veterinarian pointed out that no cases have been reported in Utah. However, our department is very concerned about the disease showing up in the state because of the increased incidence of the disease, he said. Interstate shipping rules aimed at preventing the spread of pseudorabies have been proposed by the U. S. Department of Agriculture at the request of the swine industry. Under the proposed regulations: Halt Movement Interstate movement of swine or other all livestock farm animals exhibited incoordination, excitability, and other clinical signs of the disease would be halted. Infected or exposed livestock not showing clinical signs could be moved under New department to help fight Box Elder blazes A volunteer fire department has been established in the Thatcher-Penros- e area, according to District Fire Warden Lloyd Robinette. He made the report during a weekly meeting of the Box Elder County commission, telling commissioners that the new force will be available to help fight fires that may start along the Promontory range. Utah Forestry and Fire Control has furnished a pumper there as in a number of other Box Elder communities, including Willard, Honeyville, Plymouth, Garland, Howell, Snowville, Park Valley, and Grouse Creek plus Golden Spike National Historic site.
