Show 1 Brigham City, Utah) 1977 March 17, Thursday, BOX ELDER JOURNAL, 16 Woman joins Logan Army reserve unit Corinne Comments Community saddened at tragedy women for Corinne. Her funeral service Tuesday at 11 in the Corinne Second ward chapel. Bishop Royal Norman conducted the service. President Verle Allred shared remarks with the congregation. Sincere sympathy and best wishes is extended to the Hokanson family from us all. by Marlene M. Harper It was two oclock Saturday afternoon and many of the West Corinne ladies had gathered at the home of Greg and Jenny Harper to celebrate the birth of Marvin and Alice Anne Neffs baby girl Allicen. Eva Jean Harper had ripped pages out of a childs coloring books. Then charming pictures of big eyed children were given to the ladies, along with fabric crayons. So each lady outlined and colored a picture to be later ironed on a white 100 percent nylon piece of material. The material was to be the top of a quilt for little Allicen. As the ladies were busily coloring, some of the out of town guests and late arrivals came with the shocking news, that an ambulance had just taken Von Hokanson. He had been found in the grain silo and it was feared he had been suffocated. It was a tragic moment. Everyone hoped against hope Murphy and Doris Bingham. Pauline O'Dell is the chairwomen for West Corinne and her workers will be: Doris Gerhardt, Lolla Marble, Lena Walker, Melba Mills, Gwen Severe Fire Tragedy also came to Corinne on Monday when the home of Connard and Kay Roper had a severe fire that started in ther basement. Many Corinnites came to the rescue to help fight the burning home. Fortunately the frame of the home is still standing but it is awfully black and smokey inside. The Ropers have been invited to stay in the home of Ken Harper. Tragedies come into peoples lives at various times that is why March is designated to be Red Cross month. The Red Cross performs a special service to servicemen and missionaries in contacting them in remote areas, in an emergency. In fact sometimes the only way a serviceman can be contacted is through the Red Cross. In our community jwhen Len Walkers mother passed away, the Red Cross traced for Lena, her son Wayne Walker, from Vietnam to California. Wayne got home in time for the funeral. The Red Cross also helped another son of Lenas. When son Clyde Walker was badly shot and wounded in Vietnam, the Red Cross gave him a free call home. They took him and other patients on many outings even when Clyde was in a body cast. They also helped him while he was in the hospital in Denver, Colo., for two years. You can be sure Mrs. Lena will be helping in the March Red Cross fund drive. Von was okay. Marvin Neff then arrived with their beautiful baby girl. He found a happy and sad occasion. But he arrived just in jtime for the opening of presents. His baby Allicen had received many beautiful little dresses. There is quite an advantage to having a baby shower after the baby is born, Marv thought. Attempts In Vain it was learned the many attempts in the ambulance and hospital to revieve the heart beat of Von had been in vain. Von Hokanson was such a special little boy. One of his school friends, Eraina Jaussi said, He was my science partner. He was so much fun. Yes, we are all going to miss him very much. Yet Von in his short 11 years of life had reached a level of sharing and of maturity that many reach when they become senior citizens, and some individuals never reach. When things were tough at school or home, or if any of the family was unhappy or depressed, he would always smile and say, Come on, things cant be that bad. We have often heard the wise adage that we should live everyday as if it was our last. Later, work- ers are Jeannie Bickmore, Orpha Thompson, Pauline Lucky, Marjorie Larson, Faye a.m. Vellinga, Marlaine Singh, Olive Fillmore, Elaine Carter, Natalie; "Estep and Delores Harper. V Monthly Meeting The daughters of Utah Pioneers are having their monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Alice Norman on March 21 at 2 p.m. Captain Elma Carter would like a good attendance. Sauilla R. Carter and her many accomplishments in preserving and restoring many pioneer relics and histories was presented by Lila Rader. Then refreshments were served to 13 members by the hostess. Mrs. Peggy Skeen has been busy this week. Not only has she been worrying over the Corinne Second ward dinner which takes place Saturday evening, over which she and her husband Grant are committee chairmen but she threw a bridal shower for her brother Trae Hansen's fiance. Denton Hatch was the host to mates, friends, and cousins in honor of his 11 birthday March 11. At the Norman gathering, the 57 family guests made quite a houseful. Ann Norman said it wasnt long ago when we got together with the family, we had our babies. She said now our babies are having the babies. Then she added with all those babies climbing up and down the stairs, it looked like an ant hill. The Corinne First ward Relief society held its annual birthday party on March 15. There is nothing like a Relief society birthday party for good food. If you are not a mother and if you dont have a daughter, you are really out of luck. Because the Mother and Daughter banquet held at the Corinne school Friday evening at 7:30 p.m., is going to be a special treat. The ladies Hawaiian luau.
