Show I 1 i BOX ELDER Brigham City, Utah Thursday, January 6, 1977 Interest (Continued from Page One) interest on its money until needed as the year progresses. In addition to collecting its own property taxes (for which the annual deadline is Nov. 30) the county also acts as a collecting agent for others, including the school district, towns and cities and special districts. It can be interpreted that Box Elder county earns interest on the tax money collected for others, until its distributed. But Fife figures the money should be put to work, rather than let stand idle until sent to the various municipalities and districts. It all stays right here in Box Elder county, he explained. Normally, payments to these other entitis are made in the period from January 2 through March 31. Exceptions have been the school district which asks for an initial payment around Nov. 30 and $600,000 this past year Brigham City which asked for an early payment in December to help ease through a tight cash flow situation. The city received $600,000. They asked for it so we sent it over," Fife explained. The school district received another $2.2 million on Jan. 4. IN SUMMER 1 breakfast by Flo Munson Breakfast is their favorite meal! Recently Mr. and Mrs. Winston (Karolyn Kundson) Humphrey of Brigham City were presented with a lovely grill and they are making good use of it. We have all decided breakfast is indeed our favorite meal, Karolyn said smiling. We have hot cakes, hash browns, eggs, etc. In fact my husband has gained quite a few extra pounds since we started using our grill. We hope as soon as the newness wears off, well get back to our normal weights again. Karolyn is a native of Brigham City. She graduated from Box Elder High school and seminary. She attended Business college. I am employed by Nat Allen at the Dunalle Interior Design House in Brigham City, she said. I work four days each week. I find it is ideal work. Learning interior designing, measuring for drapes is exciting and interesting. We meet such lovely people. Im also learning the art of installing rods for drapes and all sorts of useful things. Winston is employed at Thiokol Corp. Steven-Henage- Have Four Children The Humphreys have four children Kleigh is 12, Heidi, 11; Amy, 9, and Lora, 7. As a family the Humphreys swim together, enjoy picnics in canyons, etc. They attend many sport Plebe takes vacation Whats it like to be the first? by Sarah Yates it like to be one of the Whats first women at the United State Naval Academy at Annapolis? Midshipman Fourth Class Becky Olds, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Olds of Brigham City, took a few minutes vacation from her during the holidays to ponder the question. The best experience, she states, was being a member of the academys sailing team last fall and looking forward to the other end of the sailing season next spring. The worst part is pressure, pressure, pressure all of the time. Even her holiday vacation includes some of that pressure, since she faces semester finals about three weeks after her return to academy life. Classes at the academy are a much-neede- d real challenge, since those attending have been chosen from the top students in the nation and form stiff competition for grades. Life as Plebe Rather than the formal Midshipman Fourth Class title, the freshman are known as plebes and the rules governing their life are pretty strict. For example, plebes cannot radius of the leave a seven-mil- e campus even on weekends. Plebe Becky is a member of the 17th Company, Third Battalion, at the USNA. She adds that there are 36 companies, each with about 110 members, and that there are three women in her total company. She rooms with these two women, one from nearby Virginia and one from Texas. There is one other woman plebe from Utah, Charlotte Tracy of Salt Lake City, but they havent had much time to compare notes. The academy has added 16 women officers to its staff, so' ther are some women to help with guidance that upperclass-wome- n might give. Off the Collar uniforms and personal appearance, Beckys long dark tresses have given way to a neat and attractive short cut. Any simple short hairstyle is allowed as long as it above the collar, and she adds that she requires a trim about once a week to meet standards. Uniforms vary with the season, but are similar to those worn by women Navy officers in order that new uniforms will not have to be purchased by women graduating into the fleet--wit- h As to activities where their children are involved. , olds in Sunday school Karolyn teaches the four-yea- r in the Seventeenth ward. I find riding my bicycle creates lots of interest as I ride it back and forth to work she said her eyes twinkling. Not too many ladies ride bicycles to work. I guess about everyone recognizes me on my bike morning and night as I go pedaling to and from work downtown. Was Chairman Karolyn was chairman of the recent Parade of Homes held in Brigham City. she said I enjoy baking bread and cookies, proudly, and I collect lots of recipes. As an after thought she added, Im taking a class in stained glass windows its really fascinating. Below are listed a few of Karolyns favorite recipes which she shared today with Box Elder Journal readers. A Building (Continued from Page One) Richard D. This also afforded her some travel including the Merchant Marine Academy in New York, and another competition in the Philadelphia area. Since plebes cannot ride in an upperclass- man's automobile, such di- version is very welcome. Becky adds that her sponsor family lives within the radius, and that she is allowed to ride with them to their home or shopping within the area. Is Are they proud? her family proud of their Well, her father has plebe? she had her own gifts, schoolbooks and study notes. She's had time for friends and dates, for church and social events, for just relaxing over the holidays. January 4 the classes, pressure, and activities of the academy begin again for Brigham Citys own plebe. Good luck, Becky! LWV schedules lobby workshop next ITIonday League of Women Voters of Utah will sponsor two lobbying workshops for womens organizations on Monday, Jan. 10, and repeated on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the Capitol building. On Monday they will hear the Governors State of the State address at 11 a.m.; study made a scrapbook of all her press clippings and letters and photos. This brings up another interesting note, since it seems an Associated Press photographer snapped a picture of Becky hugging her mother during a parents visitation time. Store extra amounts in schools, churches, homes, in that time seeming pretty far away for most plebes. Something that has provided an outlet for Becky is her sponsor family, Mr. and Mrs. John Kokish and two children of nearby Arnold, Md. They have helped her to escape some the pressure by going to their home for a simple evening of television or relaxing, with television not allowed at the academy. The family even waited their Thanksgiving dinner so that she could join them after being on watch during much of the day. Treated equally Are the women treated equally? Becky states that except for being noticed more, the women are treated equally with the male plebes. In fact, the academy sometimes goes to great lengths to assure equal treatment. Particularly is equal treatment true in academics, with all plebes taking the same courses and meeting the same requirements. There is a difference that doesnt please Plebe Becky, who loves sailing. It seems that women are not allowed on combat ships, and that the rule wont be changed in time for next summers cruises. So the male plebes will go on large ships to foreign ports, while the women plebes will simply cruise up and down the east coast for five weeks on Yard Patrol little gray boats. Sailing team Beckys participation on the academys sailing team and her love of the water teamed to make that her favorite experience so far at the academy.
