Show 2 BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Brigham City, mass transporation systems, and possibly an electric car. Present plans to put this country on the metric system will cost General Motors $250 million, while posing a rather nasty extra cost problem for all the smaller outfits that of Utah 2) Thursday, January 9, 1975 le99ers supply the auto industry. My personal opinion about the need (?) of going metric in the near future, as well as the sudden move to break up AT&T, is that such plans are and rock the boat unnecessarily. 3) Union demands for higher pay-t- o keep pace with inflation- will mean higher prices for cars, which the carbuying public may be none too happy to pay. 4 ) Ralph Nader is always in the wings and watching. So, I would say that as far as automobile production is concerned, the curve has stopped going straight up (exponential curve) and has definitely turned into an All in all, not too rosy a picture for the ccr industry 9o 9he Edi9or...j7 ! P.S. In my last letter to the editor on Macao, its location was printed: 400 miles west of Hong Kong; please correct that to 40 miles. Not too rosy a picture Editor: It has been said, and rightly so, that what is sincerely yours, Adolph Kaltwasser, Brigham City. good for of the h General Motors is good for the country. About U.S. population depends for its livelihood on the auto industry and its many ancillary industries and services. So, if the auto industry stops production for any length of time, all the smaller suppliers also feel the pinch. Once the auto industry begins ailing, economic storm warnings go up all over the place! Since the auto industry has such an enormous impact upon our national economy, let us examine its - we hope - temporary problems. For years now a rising demand for the automobile, that spoiled darling and most cherished artifact of our modem technology, has been maintained by the annual largely superficial style changes and, to some extent, by built-i- n obsolescene. It may well be that some people no longer have the itch to buy a new model car every year; perhaps a radical shift in consumer priorities leaves them short of that extra cash with which to buy that extra second or third set of wheels; perhaps people think that cars are getting too expensive to buy and to operate. Whatever cause or combination of causes may be responsible for the recent industrywide shutdowns and layoffs due to excessive inventories, such shutdowns hurt the whole economy. Perhaps production will pick up again after inventories have been reduced, but I have a feeling that the automotive industry will have no easy sledding from here on in for the following reasons: 1) The auto industry is faced in the very immediate future with the requirement under the Muskie bill to equip cars with acceptable emission control devices. The industry is none too happy over this extra headache and will try to have the effective date postponed. Since emission of nitrogen oxides by cars is the major cause of air pollution, emission control devices on cars are very essential. Perhaps the only solution of the air pollution problem, in the long run, is the expansion one-fift- He showed the way Editor: As we go through this festive season honoring the Savior, it may be a useful exercise to consider the relevance His life and mission as the Prince of Peace has in our age and time. In some ways peace is one freedom that seems to escape many individuals actively engaged in the normal process of living due to a variety of factors associated with the civilizations of mankind. Therefore careful analysis of one called the Prince of Peace should display a realistic and practical program capable of coping with realities of life on this globe. to the establishment and An important ingredient preservation of peace is order and law established by intelligent and also powerful forces designed to promote the of the governed rather than the whim g good and and pleasure of the governing body. On this level, the Savior had a working contact with the most intelligent and powerful force in the world we know, namely His Father in Heaven whose expressed intent is to promote the happiness and joy of manking. History of the human race seems to suggest that the unenlightened or natural man is not necessarily an ally to a high order of cooperation and peaceful interaction with fellow-beingTherefore realistic hope for something better includes the necessity of mankind being able to extend his brute creation beyond the natural bounds toward a more noble level of existance. On this point, the Savior pointed out that the natural of normal human being was by nature an enemy of God and well-bein- - r g HOMEMAKtNC ANT FAMILY organization. radio and newspaper space, we By allowing time on the homes. Continuing education classes beckon locally - also to a lasting peace; however, there is still hope through the fact that men are also spiritual beiifgs capable of becoming much more than mere animals and beasts, forever prisioners of the appetites and passions of the flesh. This process of enhanced dignity and hope is established through and the commonly known terms called repentance, atonement of the Savior, whereby we may be completely cleansed to be fit inhabitants of a noble and heavenly society. Immediate application to our personal quest for peace of mind as well as establishing an orderly society lies in realistic acceptance of the fact that peace is not something we evolve into or just happen to find lying around by chance, rather it is a prize gained by choice, effort and willing' obedience to principles that will fiimly establish and maintain this happy state of mind and existence. Just about every attitude, principle or practice contrary to the teachings of the Savior have been tested and found wanting as a solution to the ills that plague mankind, therefore now as perhaps never before is a proper time to practice and obey the teachings of the Master if we really seek to gain lasting peace of mind or peace within our communities and families. Even though many fear the possible collapse of our national or even the world economy, the message of the Prince of Peace is that His program will endure and outlast any and all passing trials or tribulations to the extent that those who place their trust in Him and obey His council will also be able to rejoice with His coming whether it be in the flesh or in the spirit. Actually there is no other agency, force or power on earth that can offer as much hope and promise in the future as does this person we all honour this season as the begotten Son of a divine Father and rightfully call, The Prince of Peace. look into saving at First Security. assured beyond that. 275-54- 31 JaKco qv You have to hand it to yourself.
