The U.S. Department of the Interiors Fish and Wildlife Service intends to move toward a conversion from lead shot to iron shot in order to eliminate lead posisoning as a significant waterfowl mortality factor. The poisoning is caused when the birds pick up spent lead pellets while feeding and is estimated to kill two to three million waterfowl annually in the U.S. he reported.
