Thursday, March 9, 1972 Area Girl Scouts will open the celebration of Girl Scout Week, with worship in the March church of their choice. Many local churches are inviting the girls to attend in uniform and several will provide a special seating area with their leaders as part of the nationwide observance of Girl Scout Sunday. With the Girl Scout promise pledging duty to "God and country, the girls will be joining millions of other Scouts throughout the nation in worship. At 8 a.m. between 500 and 10000 Girl Scouts from the Salt Lake City area will gather in the rotunda of the State Capitol Building in observance of the 60th anniversary of the founding of Girl Scouts in the USA, with a program focused on the Fourth Girl Scout law. This observance will mark the beginning of Girl Scout week activities which also includes the annual cookie sale and the i r BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Brigham City, Utah traditional East Garland Couple Awaits Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sorenson will be honored by their family at an open house on the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary Sunday March 12. Friends and relatives are cordially invited to call between the hours of 2 to 5 p.m. They request no gifts. Mr. Sorenson was born in Axtell, Sanpete county, where he spent his childhood. When he was 10 years of age he moved with his parents to East Garland. He attended Brigham Young college in Logan. Mrs. Sorenson, the former Letitia Allen was born in Portage where she was reared and educated. She was employed in East Garland prior to her marriage. The couple were married March 15, 1922 in the Salt Lake LDS temple. They have made their home in East Garland where Mr. Sorenson was engaged in farming and a dairy business. Active in church work he has served as secretary, teacher and superintendent of the Sunday school, superintendent of the YMMIA, scout master, International Friendship Fair slated for Tuesday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Center, Brigham City. Cookie Sales Governor Calvin Rampton will be the first buyer of Girl Scout cookies in the state of Utah this year. When the week-lon- g sale starts at 9 a.m. on March 11, two green-cla- d girls will take orders from Governor Rampton, one of the areas best ,(i4 SHAUNA DOWNS cookie customers and a registered member of the Utah Girl Scout Council. The Girl Scouts in the executive chambers, like others in Utah, will be taking orders for cookies from March as the top salesladies in the nation as evidenced by their unblemished record for being number one on the list for number of cookies sold per girl throughout the nation. Maintaining their top billing in the Cookie caper is vital to Utah Girl Scouts because the proceeds are necessary to maintain and improve mountain camps, keep camp fees low, and provide free for the economically deprived. Instead many expressed the need for more variety in the medium-price- d range, clothing for childrens especially clothing. Mrs. Society Editor faced that dilemma this past holiday season after purchasing jeans for her boys and searching for matching shirts. It seemed that plum prints were ordered in size ten, but that all the size eights were in blue and the 12s were in brown! Somehow, it seemd that there could have been all three colors in all three sizes. As to Service Perhaps it is because she worked downtown in advertising for awhile and got to know many of the business people, but Mrs. Society Editor ususally finds the service in local stores to be pleasant and friendly. ' Of course, there is always the day that the person waiting on customers has stubbed a toe on the way to work, has on tight shoes, or whose daughter ran with a travelling away but salesman the night before they dont get faced very often. plum-colore- The d Some local residents always seem to draw these lemons when shopping, for they feel that service is not friendly. Mrs. Society Editor has to admit that there are a few places that she ' because the workers seem to be inperpetualf states of melancholy, but she'll take Brigham City over most places for friendly and helpful service. Plus Factor A big plus factor from most local women was being able to cash checks without hauling out ones birth certificate as well as the availability of local credit without calling on the FBI for a security check. Perhaps it reflects a degree of trust, for businesses are more informal and trusting and dont require one to take little numbers in order to try on an outfit, or open their coat to see they arent walking off in one of the stores dresses. And local stores dont ask customers to check their packages at the door when entering, or post security guards standing about the store. With a few exceptions, local women seem to feel that clerks are honest in giving assistance doesnt shop as to appearance for additional program expenses for all girls within the Utah Council. One of the new items on todays market not hit by inflation, the 1972 Girl Scout Cookies will be in five delicious flavors, four, the same as last cocoa 'year, and one new and will still cost only fudge $1 per box in the same family-size- d box as last year. Local Girl Scouts will be taking orders from March They will not collect any funds until the time of delivery from at which time they April will take cookies to each of the families that ordered in March. They will begin bright and early at 9 a. m. on Saturday, March 1 1 , and hope to canvass the entire city. of clothing. There is nothing more annoying than looking at ones self in a totally unbecoming rmHi SING OUT, GIRL SCOUT! Joining in hymns for Girl Scout Sunday on March 12 are of Olds Cadette Becky Troop 146, Peggy Werling of Junior Troop 493, and Christina Bergstrom of Brownie Troop 186. Perhaps it is because the clerks are often friends, but they seem willing to be friendly rather than just making the sale. And a specific request is usually met with a dig through drawers, a search for the item, or even the name of a competitor who might have the missing item in stock. Altogether, the evaluation of women on local shopping pointed to a wish for more variety and discount-typ- e business, but a genuine feeling that most local businesses were operated on a more personal which is and friendly basis plus in society. todays impersonal Sew Shows Set In Brigham City In the past few years many changes have occurred in fabrics and styles, bringing about new methods of sewing. Results of the recently-price- d shopping survey of Tremonton residents was the lively topic of an informal discussion of local women at two different gatherings that Mrs. Society Editor has attended, and she did her own earshot survey from the remarks made. The same breakdown of items seemed shopped for to exist, although shoppers werent asked to fix percentages since they were just talking about it on a spur of the status. Clothing moment purchases topped their out of town lists.
