Fred Owen has been named editor of the intramural events section, and Robert Knudsen is listed among the organization editors in charge of clubs. Dixie In the class sections, Gunderson will be sophomore editor and Marilyn Tingey will be freshman editor. All are graduates of Box High school. Some tips on Christmas mailings this year were issued this week by Postmaster C. Henry Nielsen. To assure yourself of fast, Christmas worry-fremailings, Nielsen suggested these steps. 1. Parcels should be insured. Sealed parcels may be mailed at the third or fourth class postage rates without labels, notations, or endorsements of any kind authorizing the opening of parcels for postal inspection. Packages sealed with modern sealing materials carry better in the mail than unsealed ones. Strong cord should be used. e 300-pag- e NA TlO '0 With increasing emphasis on world power threatening our peace and security, the word of "Good ing millions of people in fifty 28 29 30 Advent TO YOU PARENTS... The use of this method may help to eliminate some of the risk in seeding arid rangelands, reports Dr. John F. Vallentine, USU extension range specialist. This method tokes advantage of peak streamfiows in early spring. Many areas of central and southern Utah have water available for irrigation only in the early spring. Because of their ability to begin growth early in the spring and take advantage of high water irrigation ana yet survive through normal summer drouth, the wheatgrasses are particularly adapted to this practice. The wheatgrasses showing best response are intermediate, pubescent (stiffhair), and tall wheat-grasThe seeding of single species at the rate of 7.5 pounds per acre has given best results. Fall Seeding Is Best Seedings are best made in late fall so seedlirgs can emerge a"d make goad growth prior to spring iirigation. In this exper-iden- t glass seeding in the bottom of furrows four inches deep, significantly increased stands are compared to results achieved v, ith a one inch furrow. Grass may be seeded with a surface drill trailed behind a furrower or with a deep-furrodrill. The four-incfurrows in this experiment were found to decrease water loss through evaporation. This resulted from a decreased wind velocity at the bottom of the furrows. They also assisted in preventing rapid water runoff and erosion. However, Dr. Valientine warns that gieat care should be taken that the seed is not planted too deep in the bottom of the furrows. On sandy soils natural sloughing may be sufficient to cover glass seed placed in the furrows. Seed may also drown in water held too long in the furrows. Among those we are trying to reach, Hansen said, are some 60,000 aged men and women who were dependent upon children who died but could not until now be paid benefits because the son or daughter was survived by a spouse or child. Other groups include disabled workers who had worked for five years or more under social security in the ten year period just before becoming disabled; and disabled children of retired, disabled or deceased workers who couldnt qualify for benefits before because they were not getting one-hal- f their support from their parent.
