TAFT President Truman plunged the nation into the Korean war, although both under the Constitution and the legislation relating to the United Nations, Congress was the body to determine any such use of our Ameri-ca- n army . . . The Korean war is a Truman war. (Address in Milwaukee, Wise., 33052, reprinted and distributed by Taft for President Hq.) GEN. EISENHOWER The South Koreans only crime has been the desire to live their own lives as they choose, at peace with the rest of the world. The American decision to assist them was inescapable. The alternatve would be another kind of Munich. (Speech at Valley Forge, Pa., July 4, 1950) Allan Taylor, What Eisenhower Thinks, p. 129. GENERAL EISENHOWER The best check for sustaining world peace was to take a firm stand, and when our Government guaranteed the government of South Korea, there was no recourse but to do what President Truman said and did. The communists must be defeated soundly we must defeat them physically and defeat their intentions." (Press Conference in San Francisco, July 1950, Christian Science Monitor, 112651.) In answer to question re : what we should do in view of Chinese communist build-u- p on the other side of the Yaiu : We should try to reduce losses and stand right there and try to get a decent armistice.
