ASKING FOR JUSTICE Box Elder Indians Resisted Advance - Of White Men; Signed Treaties In 1863 (Editor's Note: The various) of Shoshone Indians in the Cheat Basin area, Northern Utah, Southern Idaho, and Eastern Nevada, who once roamed this area, hunting buffalo, deer, and utilizing the wild vegetation for food, recently brought court procedure against the government cf the United States. Their grounds for the case are based on the theory that there was a taking by the U. S. of the oriof ginal rights of occupancy the Indians. Over a year ago another case was brought before the United States court of claims by the Indians on the basis of default of payment of treaty obligations made in 1S63. The case was recourt viewed by the supreme which voted five to four against the Indians. The Shoshones have asked B. C. Call, Brigham City judge, and author of the following article to represent them in their current case.) By B. C. Call Indians in Box Elder county and the northern Utah area, a throughout the United States, lived from the natural products of the land before the coming of the while man. From the herds of buffalo and deer they secured their meat and clothing, and from the wild vegetation they secured more of their living necessities. There were battles between the tribes, but usually the earth was prolific enough to supply them with all of their wants and the.v lived peacefully. When the white men entered their country they drove off the game and ruined the vegetation. tube Golf Balls Gclf balls in attractive gift boxes. They were not schooled in the art of warfaie a swell as the United States soldiers, and they had nothing but rude implements of war. In Box Elder county and the area the Shoshone noithern tribes of Indians first battled, were badly beaten, and finally signed a treaty of peace with the United States government. Eighty six years ago this January. Abraham Lincoln submitted four treaiies to the senate for its constitutional action concerning Indians in the Northern Utah, Southern Idaho and Eastern Nevada area. Among these treaties was one signed by Governor Doty; E. Edward Connor, general of the army in this area and nine Indian chiefs, at old Box Elder now Brigham City. John Barnard, Jr., and Willis H. Boothe, early local pioneers of .Brigham City acted as special interpreters and witnesses to this document. Pocatello, the first to sign was the big chief. He and Sanpitz and Toso Witz, lived most of their time in Northern Utah and Southern Idaho. The treaty commissioners found it impossible to assemble all of the Shoshone tribes at one time, there being in the district more than 100 bands. For that reason five different treaties were made. These treaties pledged peace between the United States and the Indians and were all substantially the same insofar as the granting of rights of way T y G s iit IN j srl?
