A full rundown of the tournament results will be carried in Thursdays Box Elder Journal. 9. ir Utah Sunday, December 4, 1977 Box Elder High schools touted Bees wont have to worry about an undefeated basketball season. A team from Bishop, Calif., took care of that Friday night as 0 in they downed the Bees the second round of the sixth annual Elko Invitation tourna 62-5- ment. The loss came on the heels of the first round victory for Box Elder over White Pine' High school from Nevada on Thurs- day night. The score in that contest was as the taller Bees dominated the junior laden White Pine 87-5- just moments before. He had a right to be pleased, after his Bears trailed by as many as 11 points in the third period then rallied to win going away. Marsh Valley was the victim, 6 at Memorial gymnasium Friday night. It was the debut for the 1977-7- 8 team and also Gardner's debut as a head coach. They came back, ! Gardner exclaimed. It was Gardners emphasis on conditioning and discipline that brought them from certain defeat. The Bears never gave up, never ran out of gas. They didnt stop hustling. Marsh Valley fielded a quick 250 and sizeable team. Their pound postman was a definite problem through most of the night, especially when Bear Rivers (and biggest) inside man DeVerl Stokes sat out much of the game with foul troubles. It was there the Eagles made their break, working inside to lead 8 at half. Gardner, finding his starting combination not effective the MV zone, went to his bench. He inserted Ned Petersen, Bob Allen and Bobby Payne. Things began to click. The 11 points dropped to seven with eight minutes to Petersen, who finplay, ished with 11 points in the game, canned one, then Allen two more goals, but it was Stokes' two free throws with 4 : 39 to play that gave the Bears their first lead in the game. Allen, Payne then Blake three-poin- t play put the Bears up by seven and they held 53-4- 6-- 7, 3 27-1- Idaho. In the opener against White Game Highs Center Bob Day led the Bees with 16 points and also had a game high 15 rebounds. The other member of Box Elders tall inside tandem, Curtin Mun-forhad 14 points and eight rebounds. The only other player in double figures were guard Kline Adams with 10 points. Eleven members of the Box Elder squad got into the scoring column. However, it was a different story Friday night as Bishop, victors over Soda Springs in the first round, staged a second half blitz that left Box Elder in the dust. The Broncos nearly matched Box Elder in size and were better in their floor play, shooting and hustle. Led by sharpshotting Chris Klekas who scored 24 points, Bishop came from a 8 halftime deficit to overtake the Bees and mount a steadily widening advantage in the fianl two quarters of play. Coach Stewart again substituted freely seeking to find a working combination. d, 32-2- man-for-ma- Shut Off Inside The Broncos effectively shut off Box Elders inside scoring game and the Bees were unable to hit consistently from the outside. This was particularly true in the second half when Box Elder managed to hit only five field goals in 20 attempts for 25 percent. They finished the game with 37 percent shooting mark on 19 of 51. Meanwhile, Bishop, which demonstrated the ability to score both inside and at the guardline, shot 42 percent on 26 or 62. , 4 Another factor was the Bees inability to play without mistakes. They were credited with 25 turnovers. In scoring, Dale Money was the leader with six field goals for 12 points. Munford had 10 points. They were the only two Bees in double figures as 10 players helped the point collection. Both teams were about even on the boards. Day, who was held to four points, was the team leader in takedowns with eight, followed by Steve McQui-ve- y with seven. Greg Butler was the second leading scorer for Bishop as the sharpshooting guard bucketed 13 points. Box Elder, though a second round loser, was supported by a generous contingent of parents and school representatives including eight cheerleaders. We started to look inside and that's when we started to click, said Gardner. The coach was impressed with Petersen. The senior guard did not play last year after a season on the sophomore team. He wasnt expected to see much action Friday. But the aggressive athlete went in and helped shut off the outside scoring of the Eagles as well as adding baskets when MV threatened to blow them out of the place. The Bears didnt do well with n a defense in the first half and went to the zone after intermission. It was a good move. Although 6 in the game, the second half battle went to the Bears. Gardner had praise for help from assistant coach Dick Green who made key suggestions in the contest. Payne, also a reserve, showed poise under the MV press, as well as hitting 10 points. Allen conducted himself well inside, too, getting several points the bigger Eagles. Sandall and Allen led the team with 12 each. Petersen had 11 and Payne 10. Stokes added seven. The Bears are at Springville Friday and are next home Dec. 16 against Morgan. Box score: on for the win. Coach Gardner pointed out it was the ability to get the ball inside in the second half that made a difference. One play seemed to standout, start the Bears back. 132 Raymond Bingham (BE) dec.
