Show t r f V. V ;vi i State fair invites home arts exhibits When you win a prize or blue ribbon at a fair, chances are it isnt luck. In fact, skill, crafts- manship,. talent and other personal attributes are the that produce winners and winning objects or products," said Hugh C. Bring-hurs- t, director of the Utah State people-ingredien- ts fair. the NJROTC at Box Elder High school who floated the Green river recently included this trio, from left, Dan Richards, Lonnie Greer and Robin Allen. MEMBERS OF On river float trip group had good (wet) time ROTC Five members of the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training corps (NJROTC) at Box Elder High school went to sea sort of. recently The quintet, along with Master Chief Pete Slempa, chaperone for the trip, floated the Green river downstream from Flaming Gorge dam. Their voyage, actually made several times, took them along a seven-mil- e course to Little Hole campground. Chief Slempa said a good time (and a wet one) was had by all, noting the float trip will become an annual affair for members of the ROTC unit. People of all ages, from six months to 76 years, were observed enjoying the river and its surroundings. The water temperature as it leaves the dam is a cool 39 degrees. Even some trout find it too cold for comfort. But water fights are common among the occupants of the rafts and some even braved the river by taking a dip now and then, Chief Slempa re- ported. Life Jackets Required He noted that life jackets are required by law and must be worn at all times. The seven-miltrip takes from two to how hours, depending upon many times you stop to dump water out of the boat. Chief Slempa is considered an expert on river raft trips. He's run the Colorado and Snake rivers, the Rouge in Oregon, the Alleghany in Pennsylvania and numerous other lesser known rivers in the country. Slempa said he considers the e Green river run made by the ROTC group suitable for ages six to 16 with adult supervision in each craft and no restriction on upper age limits as long as they are physically fit. Encouraged to Join The chief said more high school students, both male and female, are encouraged to join the NJROTC. In addition to the regular classroom studies, i.e., naval history, leadership, behavioral sciences, oceanography, sea- manship, etc., many outdoor activities are included. These include rifle team, drill team, color guard, swimming, survival training, boating and basic parachute training (no jumps). Annual field trips to the West Coast also are an annual event. Those interested must sign up for class on registration day which is Wednesday, the first day of school, the chief explained. Pkone To 723-347- The home arts are no exception, he stated, and this year the fair is offering $3,600 and ten sweepstakes trophies as prizes in the home arts department. The home arts department is supervised by Roene Wood, Murray. In addition to the fair awards, the following merchants are offering the prizes indicated: sewing machine; Singer Co. Kerr Glass Mfg.
