Show Minuteman BOX cut III DOT okays bridge plan uteman missile program will not be funded for the next fiscal year." Since Senator Hatch said, the rockets are built and assembled in Utah there is bound to be a great impact on unemployment in our state. Some estimates Ive heard indicate that the Utah unemployment rate will rise a full percentage point above the present rate as a result of the Minuteman cuts. The termination of the Minuteman III system will cost the Utah economy more than $50 million in the next fiscal year plus any additional income that might have been derived from continued funding of the program in years to come. This action by the President will deeply affect the Wasatch division of Thiokol corporation which is the contractor for the first and third stages of the The Utah Transportation commission has approved the proposed location and design features of a construction project to replace the existing Union Pacific Railroad underpass and the bridge across Cutler reservoir near Cache Junction in Cache county. The approval came during a regular commission meeting held in Tremonton, Friday. A public hearing was held in the Newton Town hall, Newton, April 12, 1977, to discuss the location, design and environmental factors of the proposed construction. The project includes replacement of the old bridge across Cutler reservoir south of Newton on When the project is completed a two-lan- e bridge will replace wide bridge. the old The project will also include replacement of a railroad underpass near Cache Junction. Minuteman. Boeing also assembles the units at Hill Air Force base and a number of jobs will be lost tljere. It is easy to see that Utah will be hard hit. However, Senator Hatch went on to say, there is a much bigger question which the President needs to answer involving our national defense. Just how is he planning to defend us?" According to the Utan senator, the existing Minuteman missiles are obsolete and the l bomber is now eliminated, s so of the triad defense system has been so weakened as to jeopardize the defense of our nation. All they had to do when they started their vertical garden was to cut the holes in the liner and place the seeds or seedling plants, water, and watch the column turn into a mass of greenery. Edna Bidlacks favorite vertical garden is the one at the front of their driveway which is overflowing with blooming petunias, portulaca, nasturtiums, african daisies and other flowers. But her grandchildren are watching the picking crops, awaiting the green beans and tomatoes that are ripening in the summer sun. Lots of the people who bought the extra gardens have placed them on patios for extra greenery and they are great for apartment dwellers with small yards or balconies, she added. Theyre having so much fun watching the vertical garden grow, that the Bidlacks are already planning what plants theyll put in next year as this years crop is maturing. So visitors who think theyve discovered a huge rare plant bearing all sorts of blooms or funny-lookin- They first saw the gardens during a trip to Wayland, N.Y., where they are manufactured, and the Bidlacks purchased three to bring back home and try out. Their family and friends were so intrigued with the idea, however, that they quickly sent for 50 more. Most of them have been planted and are around town, but some folks have placed the entire garden kit in their emergency storage. Edna Bidlack says that a family could probably build one but it wouldnt be quite the same since the kit includes a special base, drain screen, treated paper liner to hold in moisture, an irrigation system, e and supply of special fertilizer so that every watering furnishes plant nuslow-re-leas- trients. Everything but the paper linis supposed to last for years, and more liner paper can be ordered from the manufact- er urer.
