The motor segments are over 12 feet in diameter with steel walls The largest case segments weigh about 11,000 pounds each and are 14 feet X' long. Joined together, the complete motor case and nozzle would stretch more than 125 feet in s more than length of the booster length. The 11 case segments that make up a single motor will weigh more than 100,000 pounds. The motor case segments are forged by Ladish in Cudahy, Wis., where the segments are formed from billets of raw steel weighing more than 30,000 pounds. Ladish heats these billets, punches out the centers, and then, in a series of forgoing and roll forming operaions, forms the case segments into their final form. The weld-fresegments are the largest ever formed by the roll forming process. The next stop is Metallurgical services in Los Angeles, where the segments are heat treated to strengthen and toughen the steel-aimportant factor since the motor cases will make 20 flights and be recovered and reused after each fw ' v., 't . , vV f 7 ' ' e n V n ':iA tN JV if- - I . 4 MOMENT during the flight of the space shuttle will be when the solid rocket boosters separate from the shuttle at an altitude of 26 miles. The two booster motors have supplied 5,200,000 pounds of thrust during the first two minutes after launch. Nearly 150 and 12 feet in diameter, the massive boosters' will tumble majestically earthward until parachutes open to slow their fall. After they splash into the ocean, ships will retrieve the boosters. Disassembled, the rocket motors will be shipped back to Utah where Thiokol will refurbish and reload the motors with solid propellant and then return them to the launch site for yet another flight. A DRAMATIC feet-lon- flight. Heat treating involves heating the case segment to 1,615 F (known as austenitizing";, quenching in a salt bath to 325 degree F., and finally tempering the steel at a temperature of approximately 1,100 degree F. The segments undergo final machining by Rohr at Chula Vista, Calif., where the joints are machined to the tolerances and configurations required. The clevis joints, which fit together and to create a leak-proaccommodate seal between segments, are carefully machined, and 180 holes are drilled in each joint for the retaining pins which , couple the segments together. At Thiokol, the machined case segments will be assembled into four casting segments, which are then insulated, lined, cast with solid propellant, and cured. In addition to the solid rocket motor, components of each solid rocket booster include the nose cone containing the 'TGasOiraej A flair' sett tasting fair sponsored by local churches on Friday, Oct. 8, will raise funds for the Box .flunks. flop ite dishes for the dinner, including both exotic foreign dishes and old American favorite s. At this altitude, the boosters will be detached for descent by parachutes into the ocean for recovery, refurbishment, refueling, and overalls.
