It is suggested that letters not exceed 250 words in length. The Voters should reject recall, budget plans The battle lines are now drawn between Republican and Democratic candidates for the US presidency, the GOP convention having named their standard bearer this past week. the campaign can settle down a confrontation between, rather than within, the two parties. It should be interesting indeed as an incumbent president, Gerald R. Ford, attempts to blunt the chal-eng- e of Jimmy Carter, the Demo wpeful who currently enjoys a wide tulge in the polls. The battle should air interest icross this broad land, hopefully spawning a desire within Americans to become familiar with the candiat the levels dates and the issues of government. Now to recall law is not needed in Utah. This, of course, is debatable. But if we were convinced that a statute to provide for recall of elected officials was in the states best interest, the proposed initiative; still would not be acceptable. It gives radical minorities too free a hand in initiating a recall election at the slighest whim, representing an unnecessary expense 'and a stumbling block in the path of good government. The budgetary proposal represents an Alice in Wonderland approach to fiscal responsibility. It would prevent an increase in the Utah budget for five years and also phase out the use of federal money in state funding programs. in the race on Nov. 2. campaign is currently simmering on the burner, waiting until after the Sept. 14 runoff to really come to a The gubernatorial pre-prima- ry boil. One thing is certain in our minds at this point, however, and that is that neither the recall measure or f Budgetary Procesures : Act Ceiling merit approval WEVE editorially opposed the recall measure previously. And for good reason. Its our opinion that a handling of the states financial affairs. But this proposal is anything but sensible. To think that a lid could be placed on the budget in these days of inflation and population expansion is naive, to say the least. Streamline the delivery of services, weed out unnecessary personnel, add new efficiency to financial procedures, yes. But hamstring the state with a five-yebudget it would invite disaster. ceiling? As for shutting the door on federal funding, it sounds good and selective culling would meet our approval. But are we to suppose that highway, revenue sharing, parks and recreation and public health funds would be refused without dire consequences? Who would pick up the slack? The only alternative, it seems, would be to impose substantially higher tax levies at the local level. Is this really what we want for that the Box Elder County fair is not tally a county fair but a Tremonton ebration, leaving the south jnty area relatively ignored. We still see signs of this but tier if it will ever be totally linated. Afterall, the fair ads are located in Tremonton respite a recent Golden Spike Empire radio commercial which ). claimed the fair was held in Brig-toaCity- ft if the fair takes on a north-ante- d identity, it is at least partly 8 result of forfeiture by citizens in Jier areas of the county. Certainly the welcome mat is out for entries in the various divisions for judging, stock auction, horse show, etc. And the fair gates are open to everyone. If citizens dont choose to participate or attend, fair officials can hardly be blamed. 1-- 15 THAN FROM MEN OF ANY OTHER SINGLE PROFESSION Editor: Despite our changing character, Box Elder county continues to be Utahs leading agriculture county. We should take pride in it, the fact that our farming heritage is yet close at hand and the rural nature of the area is still in tact. The county fair had its roots in our agrarian past. Even with modern innovations which bring it into harmony with a growing urban influence, it continues strong in that original concept. The staging of a county fair requires a great deal of time and much effort by a lot of people your neighbors and ours both those who plan and stage the yearly event and others who make it a success through their participation in the various activities. Its an entertaining show with many facets. Why not plan to attend this year? The dates are Aug. See you there. 26-2- 1-- 15 8. Thats about the best reason we can think of for expediting the project. Both the Utah Department of Transportation and contractor utilized sound judgment in reaching the agreement. It tells how folks around the country are joining the rush to take off their clothes at ; the seaside. Apparently collecting shells and sand crabs just arent sufficient any more. I dont understand it. My only experience in public display of my birthday suit sometimes occurs during that nightly sojourn in Dreamland. Im always uncomfortable, standing there on stage at Carnegie Hall or in the Peach Days parade. Folks stare. They say, Lookit him. Hes nude. He doesnt have any clothes on. I try to run and hide but my legs wont move. Dont know what that means to a psychologist but to me its darned uncomfortable. But the dream ends and I relax with a sigh of relief. The magazine article indicates that PW and a lot of other dreamers are hiding behind a puritanical bulkhead.. . What does that mean? Well, Webster says puritanical is extremely or excessively strict in matters of morals and religion. Oh, come on now! You mean if PW chooses to wear trunks or even a full set of pants when he goes to the beach, hes EXCESSIVELY strict? Ill tell you one thing. If he went to the beach in total nudity, you know what hed be? Excessively sunburned. the risk of being called something terrible like extremely religious, let me ask this question: What is the advantage of exposing the entire surface area of your epidermis to a watching world? To show that you are liberated? From what? To liberate some of these ladies from their bikini bathing suit would be like adding another crater on the moon. Youd hardly notice. At Besides, on some of those windy June afternoons at the seaside, PW would be content not only to wear a swim suit but an overcoat and mittens, too. It doesnt mean that much to me to be delivered from a puritanical society. After all is said and done, I just feel better wearing clothes. And, while this scribe appreciates the feminine form to a degree equivalent to the proverbial next guy, he feels more at ease when others do too. So youll know me the next time were at a beach where nudity is allowed, Ill be the one with my head in the sand. And the rest of me, too, if they take away my suit! ar City.
