Local merchant are preparing for this problem now and the Greater Brigham City Chamber of Commerce, Brigham City police department and area schools have camannounced a joint paign that will begin this week. g According to Boyd Newman, chamber president, December has always been the heaviest month for shoplifting. However, we expect a big increase this year with the tight money situation, inflation and the high cost of living. Alert Public The purpose of this public campaign, says Chamber Executive Vice President Ron Frandsen, is to alert the public about the dangers of shoplifting and the laws covering the violation. Police department records show that traditionally teenagers form the largest group of offenders. Consequently, Police Chief Steven Studdert says the emphasis of this campaign will be directed at the youth. Sheridan Nelson says that during the week a film on shoplifting will be shown to all students at Box Elder High and junior high schools, Intermountain School and to selected upper elementary grades. Some 3,000 brochures printed at Box Elder High will be distributed to all viewing the film, he says. Coupled with the public education campaign, there will be increased efforts by police to apprehend shoplifting offenders.
