Show 2 BOX ELDER NEWS, Brigham City, Utah Sunday, August 25, 1974 HACK Letters to the Editor ... Suffrage anniversary Why, you may well ask, are the flags flying today? h Thats easy. To commemmorate the Amendof the Nineteenth anniversary ment, the Womens Suffrage Amendment to the Federal Constitution, Lest you smile over that, it was never a laughing matter. Our Federal Constitution has triumphed through tragedy, through changes from the horse - n - buggy to lunar landings but it took over 100 years and the Amendment to recognize that women as a group were citizens with the right to vote. They were classed with criminals and the insane Seventy two years of grueling organized' 480 drives before State Legislatures, 56 work referendums, 19 campaigns before 19 congresses produced woman voter. These were years of anguish, humiliation and the indominatable determination of a few women and men. Utah was in the forefront of the effort. A Utah woman was the first woman to actually cast a ballot in this nation. The Utah territorial Legislature granted the vote February 12, 1870 and nine days later held elections, with a granddaughter of Brigham Young the first of the women to vote. And Brigham City in 1890 could boast of 100 members in the local suffrage organization. This is a heritage to build on. Women have yet to be recognized by the Constitution as individual persons. But women are proving they are persons with varying capacities to raise children, volunteer in the church, community choose careers and participate in the political process. The Womens Day of Equality is an excellent time for men and women to strengthen their commitment to the principle that this community, this nation needs the talents of all of the people.
