Here comes kids' football dedication. the presidency has special meaning to Box Elder county, a place which Mr. Ford has twice visited during the past year. a The Presidents tie here is his friendship and that of Mrs. Ford with Jim and Gloria Brown of Tremonton. Not unexpectedly, they were invited to attend Fridays ceremony in which Mr. Ford took the oath of office. THIS ASSOCIATION, of course, prompts us to have a special affection for the man. His recent visit as vice president left us with the same impression as received last October when he spent a brief stay with the Browns as vice president-designat- e. That impression? Probably many of you in your daily newspaper Friday saw the pciture and story of Sarah Mathias, the lovely lady from Brigham City who observed her 90th birthday by watching the Los Angeles Dodgers play baseball. And she wasnt just a common, fan on this occasion. Mrs. M. met Dodger Manager Walter Alston and mixed with team members prior to the contest and the folks who run the fancy scoreboard at Dodger stadium flashed a welcome message to Sarah. It must have been an exciting experience for this faithful follower of the Dodgers since their Brooklyn days. Woundnt you know it, dem Bums lost to Cincinnati, ill 2-- 0. Hospital story one of cooperation hospital at Tremonton. It was the latest indication of cooperation where the hospital is concerned. The site was deeded over to Box Elder county without cost by the Box Elder Farm Labor assocation as the location for a new county nursing home. And that brings in another element of cooperative planning with county officials agreeing not only to permit hospital construction there but to plan the home with core facilities (laundry, kitchen, etc.) adequate also to serve the hospital. Architectural firms designing the two facilities are doing so with the partnership concept in view. It will mean a reduction in the hospital construction cost, increase ef- ficiency by eliminating dual service systems and as a result reflect a public. savings to the And you cant say thats bad. tax-payin- g d This letter comes to serve a purpose. That of extending our appreciation to the Journal for the articles and the accompanying concerning our association, the community with to also better and acquaint photographs, the Foster Parent association. At our regular monthly meeting held on Thursday, Aug. 7, we were privileged to have Police Chief Steve Studdert and officers of the newly organized juvenile division, Sheridan Nelson, and Art Redding, in attendance. We would like to thank these gentlemen for their time and wish to extend to them our support and encouragement in their efforts to revamp the police department and upgrade its image and community service. As an association we are constantly striving to provide a better service to the children placed in our care, and to effect a change in the publics attitude toward foster parents. Foster parents have long labored under the stigma that their sole interest in foster children is for the money the state offers for their care. In some areas perhaps comments of this type were warranted, however, the role and attitude of foster care is rapidly changing with foster parents becoming child advocates, and working with other local, state ahd national agencies to upgrade and improve the conditions for the children in our care. A prime area of concern at this time is in obtaining an additional worker to live in and work out of the Tremonton e e basis. This area is in need of a office, on a caseworker to handle new referrals, do preventative counseling, and follow-u- p on existing cases. Part-tim- e personnel can do no more than cope with the emergency referrals during the time allotted them in this end of the county. They are unavailable, or not readily available, to the community of Tremonton except during specific hours on assigned days. This leaves many hours that other than the police department, there is no help available to the residents of this community, and certainly no one trained in marriage and juvenile counseling. To remove a caseworker from the Brigham office to cover the Tremonton office is not feasible either. With the build-u- p of industry throughout the county, and the influx of people seeking gainful employment with these firms, we will notice an increase in an already full caseload being carried by the workers within the Brigham City, south Box Elder area. It was disclosed in our regular monthly meeting that approximately 70 percent of the overall referrals now going through the Brigham City Police department are juvenile referrals. This is somewhat higher than the 64 percent overall referrals for the state. It is the hope of the department of family services, the police junvenile division, and the Foster Parents association to be able to do more preventative counseling, and less referring to the court of juvenile offenders. In order to accomplish this we feel it of great importance to retain our present caseworkers in brigham City and free them to carry on with the caseloads in this area. The Foster Parent association is asking the support of the community and state representatives at this time in achieving this and other goals set up for the children of Box Elder county. We urge everyone concerned with juveniles to get behind us in our desire to upgrade the services available on a community level, bring down the percentage of juvenile referrals through our courts, and stem the tide of ever increasing delinquency, drug and alcohol abuse now existing within the bounds of our county. Let us not delude ourselves that this is not a problem in our communities. Statistics and personal contact show otherwise. There is a need for conscientious effort and support of the agencies involved in preventative counseling end programs. We would again like to express our appreciation to the editor and staff of the News-Journfor their helpful assistance to us in publicizing our fund now going on, raising and in reporting our meeting and other events. We encourage any and all questions the public may have about the association or foster care and we will do our best to answer them. two-fol- Gingerich had just beached his craft when a member of his troop shouted an alarm there was a boat ) county communities spoke convincingly at the ballot box last week when they approved bonds totaling $927,000 to build a community Editor: Wayne MR. FORD holds a special niche as a man elevated to the presidency through the course of two resignations. He has taken the highest office without ever running the rigors of a national election. Some find this objectionable. Certainly a vote of the people is a preferable avenue to the White House. And yet if we were to choose two qualifications for a president at this time, they would be to require of him simple honesty, unquestioned integrity, to inspire trust from the American people. 11 Upgrade juvenile services The First Amendment to the Constitution says: gress shall make no law . , abridging the freedom cherished the heritage of America. j'Oj Voters in nine northern Box Elder Member Audit Bureau of Circulation!, Utah State Press Association, National Association and United Newspaper Press International. ELDER A As for this nation, we stand stronger than ever for the experience. The system of which weve prided ourselves for two centuries has been tested and not found Thursday night. It was a first for the nation. A president has never before resigned. But it came as no surprise, Mr. Nixons BOX Now let me tell you something else significant about the whole thing. Sarah and I are related. She is an aunt to my mothers cousin! How come then when this scribe watched the Dodgers play several years ago, my seat was so far back in left field, there was a time zone change between there and home plate? Heres another story. Members of Boy Scout Troop 101 spent a few days recently at Camp Hunt on Bear lake. With some fellow scouts from Bountiful Troop 263 they planned a canoe trip on the lake. The boys had in mind a warning from Dan Pack, camp staff commissioner, of a speed boat that had harassed canoers the previous week. The watery journey went without incident . . almost. Scoutmaster Yes, the canoe had been swamped by a power boat pulling a water skier. And yes, the boys assured me the guilty party was apprehended by proper authorities to await appropriate punishment. Nice work, boys! Many of you undoubtedly have heard or read about Bruce Hardy, the outstanding athlete from Bingham recently was featured on the front page of Sports Illustrated. The kid is a fine physical speciman and Pow Wow had an opportunity to watch him in action during the Utah American Legion baseball tournament. Show me something, Hardy, I thought as he came to bat. High who He did. Jumping on a fast ball, big Bruce (how can you miss with a name like that?) hit the ball on the handle of the bat. Such an smash would normally be a weak, infield blooper. But for the Binghamite, it was a line drive to center field, bringing in a run. And it broke the bat in two pieces, one portion sailing out toward third base. Not unusual, you say? Well this just happened to be an aluminum bat! Count me among the believers! full-tim- full-tim- al Take . stock inmerica. Buy U. S. Savings Bonds Respectfully, Della L.
