The Ice Capades will run every night starting at 8 p.m. with two matinees, one Saturday at 2 p.m. and another Sunday at 6 p.m. Pinon, Arizona Pinon, Ariz., located in the heart of the Navajo reservation, is a study in contrasts. It is both traditional and contemporary reflecting, to a large degree, the rapid changes that are transforming Navajoland. The people are still very traditional, despite the fact that a paved highway built into the community several years ago has brought in many new influences. But, according to the local trader, C.N. McGee, Sr., "ther are more students going to school from this area than from any other area on the reservation. And Mrs. Tillie Yonnie, a pretty, young clerk at the Pinon Boarding school, remembers when everyone drove wagons but Clifford Beck, and he had a truck. Beck served for many years as the tribal council delegate from Pinon. Was Before Paved Road This was before the paved road was built into Pinon. But the pavement ends at the .from.xheret, trading postf-and, its 30 miles of dirt road on to Oraibi, on the Hopi reservation. The 37 miles of pavement connect with the highway from Ganado to Chinle, and the country along the route is wild and beautiful, somewhat mindful of the Painted Desert of Arizona. Scattered houses dot the plains (the hogan is disappearing along with the wagon), with the Black Mountains presiding over the entire area. Theres no electricity to the homes and this undoubtedly contributes to the area remaining undeveloped. A generator provides electric power for the boarding school, the trading post and the post office. Pinon lies within the 1882 Executive Order area, a region of some 2 million acres held jointly by the Navajo and Hopi tribes. Construction in the area, which would include piping in electricity, has been brought virtually to a standstill because of the peculiar status of the land. The consent of both tribes is required before any can be undertaken. At .here is no solution in sight g for the problem. con-str-ti- long-standin- Sometimes Isolated In times of heavy rains, the community is sometimes isolated, when Wepo Wash or Burnt Corn Wash go out of their banks and flood the highway. Arthur Smith, a former principal at the boarding school who is now at Shonto, once had to ferry his pupils across the flooded highway. The people of Pinon have a reputation for being hard on school principals, but the present principal, Raymond K. Ferguson, appears to have the energy and flexibility to meet with their approval. He also has the youth, being, at 31, scarcely older than most of the 11 teachers at the school. Ferguson has been here only January, and this is his first full year as a principal. He succeeded Joseph Kahklen, who returned to his native Alaska. He has almost seven years in the Bureau of Indian Affairs and served previously at Shiprock and Sanostee, both on the Navajo reservation. since Has Placed Students In his short time here, the young Coloradoan, working with the Pinon School board, has already begun a program syhjcl may gain momentum in the future. He has placed about 20 percent of his enrollment of some 300 on a day basis, sending For Major Repairs Most homeowners, it is noted, spend considerably more than the annual average in certain years, when major repairs or improvements are called for. In out buses to pick them up in the morning and returning them to their homes at night. The 64 students who are attending school on a day basis enjoy the same benefits as the boarding school students. They are fed three meals a day at the school, are bathed once or twice a week, and their medical needs are given attention. Not a First Pinon is not the first boarding school on the reservation to experiment with a day school program. Lukachukai and Low Mountain are doing the same thing and there are perhaps other schools. Of course, for most of Ferguson's students, picking them up on a day basis still is not practical. They live in remote areas, far from the highway and from roads. But as better and more ex- tensive highways are that local businessmen and landlords are complying with the letter and spirit of the Presidents wage, price and rent freeze. Roland V. Wise IRS district director for Utah, said that, as part of their regular duties, revenue field personnel will make reviews of agreements, leases, and price lists to make sure that businessmen not only understand the wage, price and rent freeze regulations, but are also implementing them. "We dont expect to find too many flagrant violations," the In fact, our director said; experience to date has been that the business community and general public have generally been behind the Presidents economic program. Wise cited the fact that of the million citizens living in the Utah area, his office has only received 112 formal complaints as of Sept. 24. Of these 102 have already been resolved. I think these statistics speak for themselves, but we want to make sure that each person who sells a product of service or who rents housing or equipment not the understands only presidents program but is also doing his part to make it work. As a result, our people will not only help provide information about the program but will also keep an eye out for real and potential violators." The director also mentioned that information on the wage, price and rent freeze program can be secured from the following IRS offices: In Salt Lake City, 350 South Main street, telephone number in Ogden, 324 25th street, telephone number and in Provo, 88 West First North, telephone number ex- perienced persons, a Utah mission. HOME prior year. As for homeowners in Box Elder county, how did they spend their $2,456,000 portion of this total? In general, it is shown, about 60 percent of their expenditures were for addition, alterations and improvements. The other 40 percent went for repairs and upkeep. Nearly half of this amount was for painting and decorating. The rest was forplumbing, roofing, heating and miscellaneous. Local merchants selling lumber, hardware and other building supplies have been profiting by this upsurge in home refurbishing. The turn in that direction is attributed to the fact that many families who would, ordinarily, have been moving into newer houses at this stage, have been about $295 per housing unit. Throughout the United States as a whole it was $297.
