Show 2 BOX Then a flight of pintails, attracted by our decoys, sailed in. The weathered old veteran picked out a big drake. It made the proverbial barn look small ELDER NEWS, Brigham City, Utah Sunday, November 21, 1971 by comparison. Editorially Speaking Lets Show Our Interest , the two counties, it would mean a probation officer for each plus consulting services of a psychologist. In addition, the centers are a vehicle for coordinating all local services to aid juveniles, including adults and student volunteers. The main intent, of course, is to effectively deal with juveniles referred or placed on probation by the court; to help them straighten out their problems, both in the home and community, and set them on course to a productive Thats the way it was that day the as we two trudged off marsh, the youth with his limit and the 'weathered old veteran with a wet rump and shattered illusions. Needless to say, however, time eases such wounds and the pain of those agonizing moments doesnt seem so severe now. And on the occasion of PWs birthday this past week, the son, apparently in an effort to soothe his poor pater, enclosed this verse with his gift. I quote in part: Dad stood up and he shot twice, Man, that duck was big and nice, But you didnt get him, did you, Dad? No, I didnt and now Im mad. Thats okay, I said to Dad, You really shouldnt get so The prospects for scoring a hit were as remote as a railroad locomotive climbing the Washington monument. And on each occasion, his wise old father would comfort the lad with words of encouragement. The Region One Advisory council (Box Elder, Cache and Rich counties) has listed center funding as its top priority. And Joseph Tite, administrator of court services, says this may tilt the scales in local favor when the law enforcement planning council considers new programs funding Cache county leaders will be asked to join in making the effort a unified one. This is good and could make the difference when the planning council meets Dec. 3 to consider allocation of funds. But we think it will have even more impact if d to the council by a Box Elder-Cach- e delegation which should include county and municipal leaders. We simply cant try too hard; its that painted for Americanus typicalis. Its no different with Pow Wow the nimrod and hearty outdoorsman. He had his firstborn in the field almost before the poor kid could say James Fenimore Cooper. The early indoctrination has taken its toll. Now grown to a husky six feet, this same lad, while generally displaying characteristics of normalcy, has an inexhaustible desire thirst to, go afield. And he drags me along, sometimes in a weary stupor. It is at these moments that I ponder on the wisdom of our early excursions Of course, the high point came when he was old enough to wield a gun and go in quest of the wild and wily duck. His skill during those first years was akin to a blind man threading the Queen Marys bow line through a small sewing needle. life. - But things arent the same anymore. On our most recent trip to the marsh, the youngster displayed the marksmanship of a ground-to-ai- r missile. At the same time, his father, weathered veteran of many seasons, has exhibited the accuracy of an elephant kicking field goals. Its tough for a weathered old veteran to take, Oh, at first he was .philosophical. But thi,s evolved into.; frustration? And 'finally, complete dejection. Cmon, Dad, buck up, urged the son after another miss. He had five ducks. I had none. to go on. The son, wading back from retrieving the large duck he had dropped, knelt down, patting the pathetic figure on the back, offering his sympathy. Remember, father, you still have your abiding faith in humanity, he said in consolation. But what good is that if I cant hit a duck? replied the old man, breaking down once more. together. IF JUVENILE CENTERS were financed in - bear least thats the picture weve it would not okay monies to expand existing programs. And since four youth centers already exist in the district (in Weber and Davis counties) it apparently reasoned that to fund additional centers in Box Elder and Cache would, in effect, be expanding an existing program. Perhaps the line of reasoning has merit. However, it doesnt diminish the fact that the Box Elder-Cach- e arfea with a combined of about 70,000 persons, deserves population more than one probation officer between them as now is the case. HOWEVER, FROM WHERE we stand, it appears the odds will be even greater if local officials let the council know we want a center, not next year or the next, but now. The Box Elder County Council of Governments Friday unariimously approved option to send a v letter to the state panel; indicating their intense1 interest in getting the centers funded. Further, shotgun. The pintail looked around with a Man, you ARE bad look and flew away undisturbed. The tears came and the weathered old veteran fell into a heap, sobbing. Oh, what shall I ever do! No man should haye to endure this; I cant I guess every dad wants a son with " whom he can go fishing and hunting.. .do all that outdoor stuff. Have Reason To Give Thanks Join Reading the daily newspapers and watching television newscasts these days would give the impression that the world is in such a terrible mess that perhaps we should tear it up and start all over again. It would be little surprising if one of our less optimistic congressmen introduced a measure to cancel Thanksgiving Day, giving as justification that we have nothing for which to be thankful. FEEL CONFIDENT, however, that such a bill wouldnt stand a chance, first, because it might also bring cancelation of scheduled football games, and second, because it would mean the loss of a day off. May we suggest also that it wouldnt pass because deep in our hearts most of us believe that every day should be a time for thanksgiving. WE YES, YOU CAN FOCUS on all of the unpleasant things of todays world and go sour, if thats your thing. But dont ask us to join you. Sure the world, our own nation, is afflicted with many ills of which we should be aware. At the same time, weve never had it so good in terms of material wealth, enlightenment and the ability to cure what ails us. Indeed, this is a time for thanksgiving and and in a spirit of humility, rededicating ourselves to the proposition that all men everywhere deserve to share in the good that life has to offer. 25 your neighbors.
