Today, according to Theta Johnson, clothing specialist, Utah State University extension, another in thread is taking revolution place. Prior to 1806 silk was the principle thread used, but the blockade stopped the supply of imported silk. James and Patrick Clark, who had a thriving loom equipment business in Paisley, Scotland, sold silk thread to weavers. Faced with the cut off of their silk supply, they found that by twisting together the cotton yard prepared for weaving, they had a thread on their haqds to the silk thread. And so superior was it that the cotton thread reigned supreme for a century and a half. much superior New Threads But now things are beginning to change. Numerous types of thread are beginning to flood Miss Johnson the market, commented. core, monofilament, spun polyester, dual duty and dual duty plus are just a few of the terms seamstresses are having to become acquainted with," the clothing specialist added. The new outbreak in threads is a direct result of the new outbreak in fabrics. According "Polyester, polyester thetic threads have a very low melting point, and a hot iron can leave disasterous results. A solution to this is a core thread of polyester wrapped in cotton. Result? A strong thread with elasticity that does not melt at high temperatures. Miss Johnson said that seamstresses should watch the new threads carefully and compare results of different types of threads. She also gave the following thread tips to make sewing easier. Check yardage on spools to be sure you buy enough to make a garment. Select a color slightly darker than the fabric. When stitched, threads look lighter. Use both colors for a check or plaid. One for the top and the other for the bottom. o For easy threading, place something white behind eye of needle. Cut thread on a slant, never break. When sewing by hand, use a short length (about 20 inches). Dont use double thread; it tangles easily. Insert the end of thread cut from spool into needle eye and knot. Pull first stitch into a fold to conceal. If thread breaks when sewing on machine, the needle point may be rough. Put in a new needle. Fasten loose ends of thread to pool with cellophane tape saves untangling the thread box. If machine stitches pucker, adjust the tension. Use 12 to 16 stitches per inch for average sewing jobs. Do not pull thread through sewing machine needle to thread hand needle. The new threads untwist.
