Show 2 THE BOX ELDER because if a malfunction does occur into space, So wadda we lose? Forty-twhundred tons of bubble gum and Silly Putty. "Major Dimwit has denied the allegation, saying that because PW has poor hearing, poor eyesight, a complete lack of courage, arthritis in his left ear and is stupid, are not sufficient reasons to doubt his qualifications. And then comes the morning of the shot. A commentator describes the scene: "Astronaut PW is coming out of the hangar now, dressed in his chaffon space suit. Ooops, he stumbled . . . f it appears that he is hanging no ; i onto the ramp bar and two husky men APPOINTED Ronald G. Ray are pulling him toward the rocket. has been national transgiven "Now PW is climbing into the capportation responsibilities, sule. Both husky men are pushing. "A report from Major Dimwit in control central indicates that PW is ready. They compound mistakes, one on another, day after day. And yet the most advanced computer has not mans 'ability to reason. Thats why it seems a gross waste of mankinds most valuable resource when people fail to use their powers of reasoning. What are the contributing factors? , Emotionalism, perhaps, and fear and bias. HOWEVER, ONE OF THE chief contributors is apathy or indifference. It is our intent to momentarily at least, enlarge upon this indictment. The signs of apathy are evident on every side and ironically, at a time when minds should be most alert to the developments around us. This is true locally and across the nation. SADLY ENOUGH, this attitude has been nurtured In a free America where free agency and opportunity has spoiled us. Too much of the good things have made us immune to the hard fact that freedom, though God given, does not have on eternal guarantee. The apathy we speak of describes attitudes toward schools, various levels of government, Civic affairs, community projects, even the way our yards are kept. Granted, there are exceptions and it should be stated that the apathy comes in varying degrees. And this writing does not mean to imply that everyone should begin rush-in- g around, digging up good works or planting flowers. WE DO SUGGEST, however, that every citizen can take more interest in whats going on around him. He can be aware of actions taken by the city council, school board, county commission or U.S. congress. He can explore the various facets of the current school finance dispute, the newest city project, proposed legislation. And when he feels the need, each citizen can voice his protest or support. TO SHED APATHY is not a privilege In this land of ours but should be considered an obligation to future genet at'ions. In same vein, as a tiny segment of that estate known as the nations free press, we feel the Che responsibility to inform the people on all of these fronts. Thomas Jefferson was quoted as saying hed rather have a free press without government than government without a free press. But what good is a free press if people dont care? TlireoChoersforFiremen Three cheers for Brigham Citys Volunteer Fire department! The local department which undisputedly is one of the finest if not the best volunteer unit in Utah, has added to its fleet of equipment at no cost to the city. THE 30 MEMBERS each contributed to the purchase of a large panel truck which has been painted a gleaming red and equipped with a siren and flasher light, compliments of the police department. Purpose of the unit is to carry auxiliary equipment to fire and emergency scenes and it also will be available for civil defense use. PRIDE AND PRESTIGE so often go and this is certainly true where Brigham Citys fire department is concerned. The new, red truck is graphic evidence in point. So to every member, for financial sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty, and for the fine job you do all year round, we wish to offer our thanks. -- hand-in-han- d ' Mere words fall short of adequately expressing the admiration this These writer for our astronauts. dedicated few represent the epitome of manhood, the strength and character of America. d yet full of emotion for the cause they serve, they are fine examples to stand before the youth of this bossom country.
