United the Bear River near Corinne, es Department of Agriculture we met his wife, Rose. We asked designating Box Elder county as for the boss of the house and she implied that she was it. We had noticed the white stakes in the yard nearby with name plates attached. It looked like a breeding farm for iris plants. When we asked who the gardener was, Rose told us that she was interested in' raising iris plants and had done so for several years. We ask If she would show us her garden. She indicated that she had company but it wasnt too difficult as we started to talk about the flowers outside to inveigle her out into the ins plots. I have been raising special iris plants for the past five years, she said. I have over 315 varieties now growing here in the garden. Each variety is marked with a name plate on the stake next to it. I have learned each of these varieties by its appearance and its location in the garden. In this way I have been able to identify most of the species in other gardens, too, she said. .Why have you been so interested in iris? we asked. 0h, theyre easy to grow and she I just love the flowers. said. I ordered my first plants from the Cooley gardens in Oregon, and Ive dope some trading with Roy Holland in Brigham City who grows iris. I tried 72 varieties of roses before I decided to specialize in iris, she said. It seems to be too cold out here for the rose bushes and they winter kill easily but the iris plants are hardy and thrive well, surviving the cold winters. As we drifted around the corner of the house she said, Oh, yes, I have 40 varieties of chrysanthemums, too, in this plot We noticed each of these had been marked with a name plate. After we discussed the ins plants further she told us that she had 20 varieties of pinks. These are the latest out, you know, and the most in demand. I expect to get 30 or 40 more varieties in again this summer. Those over there by the tree are miniature iris. They are and maroon, yellow, purple, white. As we returned to the front of the house we couldnt help but admire the landscaping of her home in the country, how the Juniperus evergreen trees had been planted in the right place at the corner of the home with' the low growing pfitzers of the windows of the house. I have taken up the hobby of crocheting, she said and invited us into the house to see the articles of crochet which she had made. These were daffodils, a beautiful white swan in the middle of the bed and many other unique pieces of art from the crochet materials. She showed u$ one more of her skills and that was how beautifully she had made some throw rugs from the old drapes of the Corinne church. Material from these drapes had been braided into a heavy weave and had been sewed together to make something that was really nice. Well, what are you going to do with these? I asked and she said that they were going to be for sale. About this time we realized our that we were visit, that Rose really had company in the house and asked to be excused. Retuning to our car we nearly forgot the purpose fo which we 1 had made this farm visit. over-stayin- a modified certified Brucellosis free area.
