The locals are looking for the coin to pour in, with hopes of raising enough money to finance the expenses of an invitational tournament which the club hopes to bring to Brigham City. Most of the players are holdover members of last years state champion squad. This year there isnt going to be a state Junior Chamber of Commerce tournament so they arqnt going to have to work very hard to keep the crown they won, but if the necessary money can be raised from this game to pay for a tournament, many of the same teams they played against last year would be invited. The dessert to this fine menu of basketball will be a preliminary game between the North stake champion 8th ward team and an opponent which will still have to remain unannounced because at press time, Var Jensen, 8th ward coach, was unavailable. The 8th ward, however, isnt looking for a soft touch either as they sharpen up for the district tournament which will start next Tuesday in Ogden. The first game will start at 7 oclock and the Jaycees game will begin at 8:30 oclock. The finals will be held In the Ogden high school gym next Tuesday and the winners of these matches will likely make up the Utah team in the Chicago tournament. Lloyd Whitaker, Varge Lowe and Gene Walker are the three fortunate boys to gain the finals without handing out or taking a single blow. These boys are fighting in the open division. In the Junior Division, it was bad breaks that came against the Box Elder boys which put them out of the tournament. Tommy Ishida lost a very close decision to a Davis high school boy, who fought in the Olympic trials last year. Brad Hansen tossed more leather than his opponent could - stand, knocking him down for the count of eight in the first round before cooling him for the count. Brads opponent did last long enough, however, to open a cut over one ear which barred him from fighting his second round match and so he had to forfeit. Jim Craner lost a split decision to a boy from Provo, and this is the lad who is fighting in the finals of this weight. Gerry Nelson lost a decision in the first round of the Sam Gordon is coaching the boys with the very able assistance of Oscar Grunig who lias been working with.
