Knowl-ton- , entomologist of the Utah State Agricultural college extension service, advised today in listing methods of control of several common pests, Aphids attack various crops, and may be fought with fresh nicotine dust of four percent actual nicotine content; or use one teaspoon . nicotine sulfate, one heaping tablespoon soap and one gallon of water Use 1.0 percent rotenone dust when appear on cauliflower or cabbage. Rotenone sprays also are effective against many common plant lice, applied at the strength recommended by the manufacturer. The Mexican beetle appears on bean crops, and should be eliminated4by applying 9.75 or 1 percent rotenone dust, repeated three times at seven to ten day intervals. Cover underside of leaves, and begin treatment when beetles or their eggs first appear. Bean beetles and their larvae sheletonie the underside of leaves. Five different inspcis attack beets. The blister beetle may be fought with one pound cryolite, three pounds talc or dusting gypsum, applied when the beetles first appear. For flea beetles, dust with 10 percent DDT dust, applied when injury begins. Beet leafhoppers must be fought by using good seed beds and best cultural practices. The beet webworm can be eliminated by thorough application of calcium arsenate dust. Yellow striped armyworms may be controlled by undiluted colcium arsenate or 10 percent DDT dust applications. Grasshoppers infest nearly all garden crops. To poison, use a bait mixed according to government and college formula, available from most county bait mixing stations. Watch for 'hoppers to hatch out, then bait in early morning during fair weather and repeat as necessary. Maggots in onions, radishes and turnips should be fought by one ounce calomel, ounce gum arabie, and three and one-hal- f gallon of water. Use one gallon of this liquid each 35 feet on row, and apply to soil around plants as soon as seedlings appear above ground. Always bury or destroy cull onions in fall. g f Invite 4-- feathers Youth Garden Insects Utah dairjmen in all parts of the state will again enlist next month in the nationwide "Sales, The price support program for Not Surplus" campaign to build the 1917 crop of turkejs mar- a fund for expanding the .sale keted during the period October and consumption of d.itrj foods.
