This Intermountain Quarter Horse association is a vigorous, virile organization. This year, its first, its headquarters seem to be right here in Brigham City and Box Elder county, for which Brigham City is both grateful and proud. The possibilities of future shows and races are intriguing. It would be fine to keep it here. Thursdays show will, according to the Owners from all billing, be informal. over the Intermountain region Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana will be here with their horses, comparing them, bragging about them, hearing what a recognized authority from the American Quarter Horse association has to say about them. A few races may be matched, and a few high hopes may be blasted. But the show will be a success. Every owner, everyone interested in the quarter horse will have a grand time. Because, if you know a quarter horse fan, you know that the thing he (or she!) enjoys most in all this world is to look at and talk about and ride quarter horses. And youre all invited to drop around at lohn Adams corral and join in the fun! half-ho- i Right But Is It Wise And Fair? The Brigham City council acted neither wisely, fairly nor within its rights when it passed recently an ordinance prohibiting places selling beer from remaining open on Sundays. That is the studied opinion of the matter, arrived at without pressure being brought to bear by partisans of either side of the question, uninfluenced by personal prejudice on the part of the or any of its employes. The councils action was taken on what they considered moral grounds, of course. It is hard to imagine, however, that they assumed that by prohibiting the sale of beer in Brigham City and, as a likely result, in Box Elder comity on Sundays, they could prohibit the drinking of beer on Sundays. When grocery stores, pool halls and beer bars are open until dark and in some cases until midnight Saturday night, beer by the glass, bottle or case, selling who can anticipate his desire for a anyone of beer on Sunday certainly can stock glassand up keep it in his ice box until the next day. The man with a car who wants a glass of beer can drive to some other county where beer is sold on Sunday, or out into the country to some filling station where the clerk can look up and down the road to see if anyone from the sheriffs office is coming before he makes the sale. The man with a bottle of hard hidden out somewhere can accept thatliquor as a substitute. The state managed liquor "control store was open until 8 oclock Saturday night, and every afternoon the week before. The man who has no home, or anvwav no beer in the refrigerator at home, who has no car to go where beer is on sale closing the taprooms on Sundays may keep him from drinking beer. Is he the guy were after? But prhaps the council intends to go on. Perhaps this ordinance is just the first of a series that will give Brigham City stringent blue laws, prohibiting just about everything except going to church or eating at home on Sundays. e see no News-Journa- ls News-Journ- al middle-groun- no stopping-plac- d, e. The chief of police said the Utah Exposition shows is paying either a $75 or an $85 a day license fee to the city. The carnival the Jaycees wanted to sponsor, and may, yet, later this summer, is a small outfit especially for kids. It has a on d brand new which rides cost only a dime, a kiddy ferris wheel, a kiddy aeroplane ride, and one of the s for older folk who big want to take a whirl. We say it is subtle class distinction and are unable to show that class distinction isnt common in many state and federal laws. We say it is inconsistent. Isnt it better to have beer available in Brigham City on Sundays than to have some of our people driving to other towns to drink leer then driving home again? Isnt it better to have movies available to those who wish to see them here in Brigham City, where the same movie may be seen Monday or Tuesday, than to force our people to drive to Ogden or Salt Lake City if they decide to see a movie on Sunday ?
