Between The Lines Its what isnt there thats of real importance in the service records of Box Elder county and Brigham City men and women which are the main portion of this 1946 Peach Days edition. The filled out, printed forms from which these records were written had plenty of space for dates and places, for names, and for a list of battles. But the real story of the hunk of time out of the life of each man and woman whose record is in these pages, the time spent in the armed forces of the United States before, during and after the war, must be read be-- . tween the lines. Mothers and fathers and wives and are included in the brief accounts ; their names, that is. But the worrying, k agonizing weeks without news of one or I v more sons in battle overseas, the stillness fit the house without its youth, things like ,, that, are missing. The list of camps and fields, stations and ships, battles and duty, some accurate as ,.to places and dates, some not, are there too. Some of the .lists cover a period of several f .years, and take an inch or so of space. Theres a lot missing. Theres marching in dusty fields in blistering summer desert sun; theres snatching a few hours of liberAi ty in a small town whose en- tertainment facilities are packed with uninformed men or women. Theres boot camp training in a naval base infested with mumps j or measles epidemic.Theres homesickness, the finding of new friends and being from them at the next camp; theres the jokes, the griping, the j ; the cameraderie, hatred of regimentation and discipline that .. foes on behind the scenes. Theres the riding from camp to camp on crowded troop trains, playing poker, or cards, and sleeping 4all over the seats and aisles. Theres the visiting places, sightseeing trips, souvenir collecting and picture taking. There are the weeks of maneuvers in desolate, isolated parts of America, to be followed up by months of living in foxholes and tents; fighting in the rain, snow, blistering desert sun, or muggy heat. Theres the constant strain of battle, of danger; for some being wounded, suffering hours and sometimes days of excruciating pain, and long months and often years of convalescing in a military hospital; for some theres staying at army and navy bases in the states as instructors, clerks, hospital attendants or Theres the being behind the scenes s in the service forces and not receiving spe- -, cial decorations or citations but being a e iecessary part of the great military machine. Also left out are the long days aboard a troop ship taking turns at the fresh air and sleeping in crowded, smelly quarters below deck. Names of ships are mentioned but the life aboard them isnt. Theres monotony at times, the intense action in the battle zones, the dodging of torpedoes and shooting down of suicide planes. Theres all the horror of war, watching a ed hus-ban- ds , ul sep---Arat- ed t 1, iV i doc-'tor- s. 1 i of-l- L THE BOX ELDER JOURNAL 1909) I li considered new-foun- (Established and once-peacef- be ei THE BOX ELDER NEWS 1896) " Promoted to flight 1942 k life.)
