Phone Usually Same Day As Applied For. BOX ELDER lcw6-oiirnai Brigham City. Utah following the death of the OPA at midnight June 30th, led to a very flighty, irregular trade for the first week in July. With some mai kets closing for the last half of the week in observance of Independence Day and some for Thursday only, most of the trading was confined to the firstthree days. For this period, cattle receipts at 12 major points were practically the same as for like period the previous week and some 10,000 larger than for the corresponding days a year ago. At the Los Angeles Union Stock Yards ai rivals figured around 5000 head, versus 4130 the previous w'eek and 5303 like period a jear ago. Sharp, irregular advances in the wake of the ending of OPA price controls, subsidy payments and the dropping of government setasides and slaughter quotas, forced cattle prices to record hgh levels. Price gains on slaughter stuff ranged anywhere from $1 to $2 per cwt., or even more in extremes. Best steers offered cleared at $19.50 to $20, new all time highs on the Los Angeles market. Good to choice grass cows hit a peak of $18 on a load of the n Tejon Ranch cows from Kern Calif. county, Light heifers touched $18, and calves $20, all record tops for this market. Other steers sold at $17.50 to $19.35, three loads at well-know- Friday, July the latter price and light loads of Kansas steers at $18 75. Feeder buvers were inclined to hold off and not follow the rising tide on slaughter cattle, until the present abnormal situation clarifies. Hog prices rose as spectacularly as fat cattle. After being long held at ceilings of $15.80 on gilts and barrows apd $15.05 on sows, the market worked up to a $17.50 basis on butchers, and a $15 50 to $16.50 base on sows. Virtual absence of butcher hogs Wednesday left the market on a hard to quote basis. Many traders leaned to the opinion that good hogs would have brought $18 or above at midweek. It was significant that hog receipts at 12 markets for the half week were more than four times as large as for a similar period the previous week and practically double marketings of a corresponding period a year ago. Apparently the country has hogs to sell if the price is to the liking of producing interests. Sheep and lamb prices moved upward with other classes of meat animals, though gains were less sensational and scarcely enough were offered at the Los Angeles yards to fully gauge values but market talent were quoting good wooled spring lambs up to $17 or better at midweek.
