A EVERY SATURDAY Yesterday was the first day of Spring (once a year, we capitalize it), and our almanac didnt say a word about it. All it said was that the 2L-,tThursday, was the day MacArthur arrived in Australia in 1942. Now Im definitely off this almanac not even mentioning that its Spring! Appar- OVER K.S.L. , We're Entitled To Know Scuttlebut continues to fly around like March snowflakes regarding the closing or ently, though, its the one the of Bushnell General hospital. The longer the thing goes on, the more it appears, in the opinion of this writer, that IJushnells closing or continued ojmration hingles entirely on political issues. Just what constitutes political issues is something else again. But the facts and logic of the situation leave no room for debate. There must be other and more subtle nnotivants, or the situation would long since have been settled. The idea that Veterans hospitals must be close to a medical school and center as an argument against the use of Bushnell by the Veterans administration long since has been shown to be sheer absurdity. In any major city a Veterans hospital would be extremely unlikely to be anywhere near as close in travel time required- - to the medical center as Bushnell hospital is to the University of Utah campus. In normal traffic it takes a good deal longer to get from Denver university medical center to Fitzsimmons General hospital than it takes to get from the U. campus to Bushnell. As for ability to care for visitors, families and guests of patients at the hospital, Brigham Citys housing shortage is in terms of tens where Salt Lake Citys is in terms of thousands. Turn five hundred hungry peo-- i and theyll be fed pie loose at better and sooner in Brigham City than they will be in Salt Lake City. . Spend any morning, from October to May, under Salt Lake Citys smoky overeast and compare it with the clear, pure, sun brightened mountaih air of the Brigham City area. It doesnt take a doctor to tell which is more conducive to good spirits and good health. We arent assuming that the question resolves to Brigham City vs. Salt Lake City It doesnt. A for a Veterans hospital large- majority of the influential people, the intelligent-leadersof our capital city are convinced that logically Bushnell hospital should be retained in operation by the Veterans administration when the army no longer has need for it. Veterans hospital are crowded beyond capacity now, wherever they exist. The Veterans, administration is crying for more hospital facilities and planning extensive building programs. Deserving veterans in need f hospntalization are required to form long waiting lines, figuratively speaking. All thjs while the Veterans administration debates whether or not it wants to take over and operate Bushnell hospital. Bushnell was built as- a permanent hospital by the army medical corps and army engineers. Does the Veterans administration doubt that the army medical and engineer corps are incompetent? Does the Veterans administration build better hospitals? Bushnell hospital has been operated for three and years as a model of efficiency and effectiveness. Every patient has been pleased with the hospital and the it has rendered him. Can the Veterans administration show a better record for its use or non-closin- g, non-us- e . meal-tim- e, , ! , one-ha- lf ser-iVi- ce , facilities? .Bushnell hospital was built when building materials were better, and construction costa , far cheaper, than they are now. It could not be built anywhere near as well toay for the same amount of money. Even the funds administration j available to the Veterans men , for, the aid and treatment of are limited. Is a saving of a good many millions of dollars to small for them to bother with ? Is there no other service or assistance needed by our men for which this money could be spent? The answers to all of these questions are o obvious it would seem they could be accepted without further debate. Yet the , ce , debate continues. And these points and the continued operation of Bushnell are of vital importance to every man, not only in Utah but throughout the West. Its high time, past time, that these ques-- . tions were asked, not just once but msistent- ly. Its your responsibility yours, personally, individually to ask them. And ask them. . .Write to your senators and congressman, write to the Veterans administration, write . to anyone you know' in the higher levels of our state and national governments.
