Show WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- NEWS JOURNAL, SEPTEMBER 15, 1977 lS Darts Drop To Braves EC3U Football Race Talcing Shape By DAVE WIGHAM With two practice games under their belts the high schools now get down to business with the task of winning a region crown and even more gaining an invitation into the state tournaments at the conclusion of the season. BASED ON their past performances in the two races for previous games this is how I see the those state berths. In the new Region One the team to beat would have to be the Bountiful squad. First they beat a highly respected Brighton team then they downed the always tough Two Kyle McKay touchdown runs coupled with a Chris Davies to Scott Pendleton touchdown bomb lifted the Bountiful Braves to a hard-foug7 win over the persistent Davis Darts. ht 21-- BOTH teams had high hopes going into Friday nights game: Davis to main- tain its supremacy over Bountiful and the Braves to avenge last years loss. Bountiful opened the scoring early when Kyle McKay, Davis squad. The Braves have jelled well for the earliness of the season and they have nowhere to go but Bountiful studentbody president and nephew of Utah Congressman Gunn McKay, powered around right end for a 51 yard touchdown run. The PAT was wide left and Bounadvantiful assumed a up. tage. THEN COMES the real dog fight for that second invitation to Rice Stadium in November. Three squads have good shots at it, and first place, in Layton, Clearfield and ON THEIR next possession Bountiful quarterback Davies lofted a 40 yard pass to Roy. The Lancers and Royals were pre-seaso- picks to n finish in front of Bountiful but both have struggled in the early going. Layton didnt look as polished against Davis as did the Braves, but did improve in whipping a solid West crew. The Royals dropped their opener to Skyline, no disgrace in that, but they looked unimpressive against Ben Lomond. The Falcons are still unknown at this time, new coach Brent Hancock has his troops rolling and this weeks game with Layton will go a long way in telling what kind of season the Falcons will have. i SKY VIEW could be the surprise of the league. The Bobcats lost a narrow game to West and then shut out and beat their rival Logan. The Bobcats get tested early as they take on the Roy squad this week. Over in Region Four one would have to go with Davis even though they havent won a game yet this season. In both their games, with Layton and Bountiful, the Darts have shown that they have plenty of talent in their fold and are the team to beat. They are the defending state champions and until someone beats them they stay number one. THEN THE fight .of the second state spot seems to be between Ben Lomond, Bear River, South and Ogden. The Scots lost a 6 contest to the bigger Roy squad so they should be considered in the top area. Bear River has a lot of talent up north and South will be competitive in their new region. Ogden has always been a rough team in the 4A ranks and their move to 3A can do nothing but help 7-- their program. So there you have it, Bountiful and Davis at the top with the others chasing. Remember thats just one persons thinking, and the championships are won on the field not on paper. 6-- 0 TOP WINNER receiver Scott Pendleton to On the the Dart 10 yard-linnext play McKay sped around left end to score. A e. two-poi- nt conversion increased the Bountiful lead to 15-- as the teams separated for halftime. Bountiful stopped Mitch Keck short of the goal on fourth down after the teams resumed play in the third quarter but was unable to get out of the hole when McKay fumbled and Davis recovered on the 30 yard-lin- 14-- But the comeback was on the next Bountiful possession, Davies threw a 50 yard bomb over the stifled when, outstretched arms of Jeff Starkey and into the hands of Pendleton who scampered the remaining 10 After two road games, one victory and one loss, the Woods Cross football team makes their home debut this yards to the goal. According to their coach, Bill Jacobsen, We have good size and fair speed and we have good depth for a small school, he noted. But brought the Bear River we are very young and hope to win. That means that both clubs and will be young inexperienced going into the game. The Wildcats have no one on their squad with any previous experience and they dont have any seniors. The Darts are always near the top of the league and are the defending state champions in 3A football. Scott Watson will likely be the starting fullback in this weeks contest. ON THE line, both ways, will be Fred Ewer, Scott Hodgson, Alex Pashley and Jim Saffell who will need to catch on to the double wing offense in a hurry if the Tigers want to stay in the game. For the Darts, they need to improve on their pass defense as the Bountiful club had good success in throwing against them. In their first game the Darts almost shut off the pass for the Layton club, so they do have the people who can do the job. ITS TOUGH for a club to play the Darts on their home field and see the double wing for the first time, thats two things against the Tigers to start with. The Darts have too much going for them to drop this one. The program will involve Region One schools Roy, Weber, Bonneville, Clear- field, Layton, Bountiful, Viewmont and Skyline.
