Show NT WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- NEWS JOURNAL, MARCH 3, 1977 IS Ends 28 Years In Air Force Monday, Feb. 28,' was the final day of 28 years of military service for Hill AFBs Chief Chaplain (Col.) Michael J. Finneran, known affec- tionately throughout the armed forces as "Iron Mike. MAJ. GEN. Henry J. Meade, Air Force Chief of Chaplains, arrived at Hill AFB Sunday morning to attend retirement functions scheduled that night and the next morning. Others expected to attend were Air Force Logistics Command Chaplain (Col.) Harold D. Shoemaker; Bishop Joseph L. Federal of the Salt Lake Diocese; Chaplains (Col.) Arnold Porter and (Lt Col ) Joe Sullivan, both pf the office of the Chief of Chaplains; Maj. Gen. Edmund Rafalko, Commander, Ogden Air Logistics Center, and Brig. Gen. George L Schulstad, Vice Commander of the center. A SPECIAL dinner and reception honored Father Finneran Sunday night in the Officers Club. Not present for picture, Lorynn Willden, Julie Gan and Maurine Trussed, advisor 1 CONFERENCE The Sunset Utah Stake Laurels are planning a conference to be held at the Sunset Stake House on March 11, 12 and 13. will conference THIS in the include all girls, Stake. The theme of this three-da- y conference is "To Everything There is a Season and a Time to Every Purpose Under Heaven. This conference will begin on Friday, March 11 at 7 p.m. with a banquet for the girls and their mothers. The banquet is being catered by the Mansion House and being Ward served by the Bishoprics. Entertainment will be provided by the LDSSA. .' . SATURDAY workshops will begin with registration at 8 "40 a m. There will be a General Assembly, where the theme will be introduced and Joan Child will speak on dating. At 10 a.m. the girls will divide into workshops on Temple Marriage and Handicrafts. Lunch will be served at noon. At 1 p m there will be another General Assembly with a boys pane! EACH WARD is represented by two boys and the questions will be provided by the grls of the Stake. Afternoon workshops include will etiquette, building a tes- timony, makeup, and cake decorating. Workshops will adjourn at Saturday p.m. 4 evening, beginning at 7 p.m , will be a Date with Dad This will be an evening of games and learning a variety of dances by instructor, Dave Weaver. THE SUNDAY session will begin at 2 p m. This will be a special Sacrament and Testimony meeting. The guest speaker will be Lela Parkinson. Born in County RoscomFather mon, Ireland, Finneran graduated from St. Patricks University and was ordained a priest in 1942. Layton Jim and Joyce Taylor left Layton Saturday to return to their Florida home. They spent a week visiting at the Layton home of their stepmother, Mrs. Elsa Taylor. In a break from his teaching duties the same year, Father Finneran became a civilian chaplain for the Armys Camp Rucker (now Ft. Rucker), Ala., where he was the only Catholic Chaplain serving some 35,000 Catholic men. HE THEN returned to his teaching assignment until 1946 when he became pastor of St. Leos Church, Demopolis, Ala. In this mission he super- vised the construction and financing of both a church and rectory, and in 1949 was about to receive the added responsibility cf building a hospital and seeing to its administration when he elected to join the Air force for just a tour during the Korean conflict buildup. IN THE following 28 years, he has held every possible job of a service chaplain, from installation chaplain to inspection team chief. His military assignments have included duty in Japan, Korea, Alaska, England, Turkey and air bases and headquarters in California, Texas, Missouri, Colorado and South Carolina.
