THE SMALL natural for- mation, located on Highway 163 halfway between Moab and Monticello, had been called Baby Arch by local residents, according to Hardy C. Redd, owner of Redd Ranches who employed Fer-mi- n R. Lopez. Mr. Lopez died in . 1962. Redd, who said he had been looking for a way to honor his foreman, began writing letters in 1974 to the Bureau of Land Management and the Board of Geographic Names in Washington, D.C. seeking permission to rename the arch. His request was approved by those agencies in May 1975. ROBERT Nieves, SOCIO executive director, says the dedication is an historic occasion for the people 1 represent. This is the first time ever that such an event has happened in Utah - the naming of a monument for a Spanishspeaking individual, Nieves said. LOPEZ, born in New Mexico, began working for Redds father in 1915. Redd says even after retiring at age 75, Lopez returned to the ranch during the summer, to do chores and mend corrals he built 50 years earlier. Nieves says the public is invited to the dedication and to a dinner in Monticello at 6 p.m., sponsored by the local SOCIO chapter. :55RWHWKW?S:5S5S:: CROSSED EM UP away did he? Maybe you read it when you were a member of the lollipop generation. Its the story of a little blue switch engine that isnt supposed to be able to pull a long, heavy train over a steep mountain. It had never been over the peak. BUT THE little engine gives it a fry. If a little boy thinks he can get an A on a math test, chances are hell do just that, or at least come much closer to it. If a young girl thinks she can master a difficult piano piece, just watch her go! IF the young mathematician or musician thinks it cant be done, failure may be a foregone fact. A child psychologist has reservations about the kind of message in The Little Engine That Could, saying the danger is that the child tries things that are beyond his power. isnt there a far greater danger that confronts our sons and BUT REALLY, daughters in life? Thats the danger of being frozen, paralyzed by the fear of trying out for the school band, the debate team, football squad or a course. I SAID before that Im ap- palled at the number of children who have not read The Little Engine That Could. Its estimated that eight million kids have read it. Thats not nearly enough. Have your children read it? Officers For FBLA At Davis activities planned such as putting up their own billboard and preparing to go to state competition.
