In a fight that lasted about an hour and resulted in heavy casualties for both sides, 3,000 Patriots engaged 1,000 Tories. General Nathaneal Greene replaced Gates as commander of the American forces in the south. Under Greene, Daniel Morgan and Francis Marion, the famous Swamp Fox began a series of guerilla raids against Cornwallis. Harry Light Horse Lee, who became the father of Robert E. Lee, also began regular nuisance probes against the British in eastern Virginia. General Clinton, in New York, sent down 1,500 troops to strengthen the Yorktown garrison. For 2 months Cornwallis chased Greene and Morgan through the hills of Virginia and South Carolina until, on March 15, Morgan turned and fought at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, which ended in a British victory at a cost of nearly a quarter of their men. He began to fortify Yorktown and Gloucester Point directly north across the York river. LaFayette settled in at Williamsburg a few miles to the northwest. UP NORTH, strategy was being developed. Washington was in bivouac with 2,000 men along the Hudson river a few miles below West Point, where he was joined by with 4,000 Rochambeau French allies. Washington wanted to retake New York, but Rochambeau, aware that the French fleet was on its way from the West Indies, persuaded him to move south against Cornwallis.
