There, the sultans of Morocco and Tripoli were forced into an agreement to stop molesting our vessels in the Medi- terranean and holding American crews for ransom. Early in the war of 1812 with England, the Constitution, under the command of Captain Issac Hull, was suddenly surrounded by a squadron of British warships off the coast of New Jersey. After 60 hours of brilliant maneuvering she escaped without a scar and returned to the safety of the Boston harbor. AUTO GLASS SPECIALISTS 500 GOOD USED WINDSHIELDS A YEAR later she slipped through the blockade of the Boston harbor and sailed to the West Indies where her crew captured a huge store of British military supplies. Before returning to the home port she captured the enemy Picton of 38 guns. In February of 1815, after again evading the harbor blockade, she captured two enemy sloops on the high seas, the 36 guns cyane and the 16 guns Levant. On the way back with her prizes she ran into a large British squadron which retook the Levant. The Constitution escaped unharmed and brought the Cyane into the wharf at Boston. THE Constitution became known as 'Old Ironsides because of the negligible amount of damage she suffered during her busy and hazardous existence among her enemies on the high seas. IN 1830, after 33 years of service, she was considered unseaworthy and condemned to be decommissioned and broken up. When this order became public knowledge it was met with sentimental objections. Oliver Wendell Holmes, one of the most gifted and prolific poets who ever lived, expressed his feelings about old Ironsides in verse. He began with a note of shame and accusation Ay, tear her tattered ensign down! Long has it waved on high. He felt that a more honorable fate would be to take Old Ironsides out to sea and sink her, as he wrote in the closing lines, And give her to the God of storms, The lightning and the gale! THE PUBLICATION of this poem was instrumental in arousing such fervor among the citizens that the dismantling order was rescinded, and Holmes gained a reputation. In 1860 Old Ironsides was converted into a school for the United States Naval At the start of the Academy. Civil War some sympathizers attempted to make her into a warship for the Confederate Navy, but they did not succeed. As a floating Naval School she was taken to the security of the port at Newport, Rhode Island, then back to Boston in 1897. HANSONS penchant for hard work and dedication instilled in his musicians paid off Thursday night. The high school band played with the precision, big lush sound and interpretive flare that one would expect in a well seasoned symphony. The program was a colorful array of highly listenable band literature ranging from the stirring organ accom- panied finale of the Saint Saens Third Symphony, to a lighter group of contem- porary American pieces including the theme from the movie Jaws. WHILE THE band displayed its mettle with the more difficult soft dissonance of Giannines Praeludium and Allegro and the spirited Incantation and Dance by Chouce. The performing highlight of the evening was the hand picked wind ensemble. A smoothly played Overture in C by Catel Goldman only wheted ones appetite for the smaller, more polished cadre of the ninety-tw- o member band. THE REAL crowd pleasers were the American Civil War Fantasy by Bilik and the Perennial, all American favorite Stars and Stripes. These were the pieces that reportedly brought tears to the eyes of generals at the bands recent performance in the Pentagon. The heard rarely Euphonium was cleanly played by soloist Kevin Pea in terson Harding arrangement of Bizets Flower Song from Carmen. AND BEING basically humanitarian at heart, mankind, knowledgeable visitor to the wilds, agrees with his childrens urgent pleading to take the baby home and save it. The truth is, contrary to the influx of entertainment which portrays animals to have human characteristics-lik- e Bambi, wild animals do not survive well in captivity. FAWNS, FOR example, cannot survive on homogenized milk. Most people do not have enough knowledge concerning the animals needs to care for it properly. And, in addition, Utahs Wildlife Resources Code makes it unlawful to, hold in captivity... any protected wildlife... except a few species designated within the code. To the untrained eye, a fawn may appear to be abandoned when it is actually in a perfectly normal situation. Frequently, a doe will feed her fawn early in the morning and then leave for many hours in search of food. If humans disturb the area where a fawn is left, there is a possibility she will be too frightened by the smell of human presence to return to her offspring. THATS A TALL statement that could be expected of a hometown critic. However, as a less biased observer, weened from early childhood on this countrys best symphonies, I can say without much qualification that this ambitious band of young artists takes a back seat to no one. map.
