Show Mayor Lewis G. Shields begins his seventh year in public office as Mayor of Lay-to- n City and as we pause and review accomplishments and progress, this is noted: THE EXISTING municipal building was remodeled and a new wing constructed to house the Layton Police Department. New court and council chamber was provided along with a new fire proof vault, a new planning commission chamber, expanded space for engineering and inspection, additional space for the water department, space for the parks and recreation department and a new office for the attorney. citys e All areas have been provided with the most facilities to accommodate our citizens. A new pistol range is nearing completion, the only one in the entire county. full-tim- te SUCCESSFUL programs initiated over these years include: Police Community Relations, Bicycle Safety, and Crime Prevention. Personnel in the police department was set at 11 full time and 6 part time in Car-per-m- 1970. Now, the department has includes two curb, gutter and sidewalk, two water and two sanitary sewer. IN PUBLIC works, new asphalt overlay and chip and seal has been accomplished each year since 1970. Some 12 miles of new streets have been laid and 22 miles' have been chipped and sealed. Two new reservoirs have been built. One a 2,000,000 gallon and one 1,000,000 gallon. Thousands of feet of various size pipe have been both new and placed replacement. This was accomplished by the sale of $500,000 General Obligation Bonds and a $378,000 Government Grant. A NEW deep well pump on Fort Lane was installed in 1972. Presently a new deep well pump is being installed on the Hill Field Road facility. In 1972, Kays Creek was dredged and construction was provided to accommodate storm sewer and runoff water for now and far into the future. Storm Sewer lines have been installed in a number of troubled areas to help prevent property damage. Progress has been made each year. 19 full time and 3 part time in 1976. Three squads for patrol with a sergeant in charge of each. ONE AND million dollars in industrial bonds were sold to provide developof ment the Smith one-ha- lf Management Distribution Center. This was the second such bond sale in the entire State of Utah. Mayor Shields has been instrumental and active in veterans affairs. The Mayors Veterans Task Committee was organized and participation in jobs for veterans' has been made. THE organization of the Layton City Improvement Association (LCIA) has been accomplished. He is presently serving on the Utah League of Cities Board of Directors (2 7S!lhi tions console has been ink stalled with full time dispatch in effect. Nine business facilities are presently covered under the burglar alarm system. Construction of a new fire station was completed in 1972 at a total cost of $144,000. MERLIN Fielding has over years of scouting experience. He was a com-putoperator for the Boeing Company and is now a local real estate salesman. ;' Acfivein his church he gives er week at Philmont Scout Ranch taking training. He has spent much of his time in seeing that the girls in his ward had an opportunity to go camping and to get close to God and nature. HE IS an orthodontist in Ogden. Active in his religion, he is a counselor in the Kaysville Utah Stake presidency. He and his wife Alice have two sons and two girls. One son is a doctor and one is a dentist. They have both been active in the program. scouting scouting, working at Hill Field and being on the high council, he also tried his hand at carpentry and along with the assistance of his family, built one of the largest homes in Kaysville. He and his wife Evelyn are parents of ten children; seven girls and three boys, and has one Indian boy living with him. Two of his boys are Brothers are: Paul R. Thomassen,, San Jose, Calif.; Peter Olaf Thomassen, Long Beach, Calif.; and Arthur W. Thomassen, Kaysville. Sister is, Marguerite Wilkinson, San Diego, Calif. Roetta married Roy N. Feb. 20, 1920. He died Aug. 4, 1952. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple June 27, LIFELONG resident of Kaysville, Rbetta has been active in civic and church affairs. As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints, Roetta has served many years in the MIA activities, including drama. Relief Society, Senior Citizens committee, and as a dance director and also as flower Eagle Scouts; David and Robert. JEAN ADAMS Love is a native to Layton. She was a graduate of Davis High School. In school she showed leadership qualities, being a valuable direction to the studentbody officer and represented Davis High in young men receiving a variety ;:-oprograms. As an area representative for the United : : Way a valuable service for the community and scouting was state activities. She was also a graduate of the LDS Seminary. realized. HER ADULT Scout service started in 1949 working largely with the 11 year old Scouts. Many 5 mile hikes through the fields and mountains were taken with the Scouts gathering edible wild herbs and plants that were cooked or eaten in their natural state. In 1972 came a call to work on the stake level and she is still the stake scouting 11 year old director. HER GREAT programs and ARTHUR JOHNSON has 25 years experience as a Scout and 23 years as an adult Scouter. His experience includes scoutmaster (twice), cub committee cub-maste- r, ; HE AND his wife Linda, are parents of four children, Staci ' 4, Jodi 1, Greg 12, a star scout ; and Ronnie 9, a cub scout, f Dr. Jack Rampton has a ; iota! of lb years of registered adult service to Scouting, e having served as troop com-Lmitte- chairman, scout-- : and a member of the master, troop and post committee. HE HAS contributed much rof his time and finances to 'support Scouting and take the L youth on camping, canoeing, ;and fishing trips. . While serving as bishop of his ward he did much to sup- port and encourage Scouting. As a result the troop became :26th, 14th and then 8th in the .Mop 50 troops of the LDS '".church. HE HAS also spent one . chairman, committeeman in troops and posts, merit badge institutional counselor, representative, Francis Peak District advancement chairman, and stake scout advisor. HE HAS been instrumental in his unit meeting their sus- taining membership goals four different years. Taking manv spare hours as a merit badge counselor and has enriched many young men. Other tasks of leadership Institutional include Representative, Unit Committee chairman. Explorer leader, assistant Scout leader. Deputy District Commissioner, District Chairman for Blue Print for Quality, District Nomination Committee and he served on other coma mittees such as etc. and now serving as second counselor in the brishopric. He has gone with troop and post camping many times, giving his vacation time to go and be with them and furnish transportation and supervScout-O-Ram- dynamic enthusiasm display a magnetic leadership to the young men coming in contact with this dedicated scouter as a merit badge counselor. Over the years many young mens lives have been enriched through knowledgeable and expert demonstrations. She was the purchasing agent for the Double J. Dairy. She is now the business manager of the company which includes measuring land acreage and preparing accurate legal descriptions for deeds. She is an active member of her church serving president of the Relief Society and theology teacher. her husband. Jay, are parents of 10 children (eight living) and SHE AND seven grandchildren. Robert, a Life Scout, Evan a Star Scout, Adam, a Life Scout, Joe, an Eagle Scout, Tom, a Star Scout, Sam, a First Class Scout, and two daughters, May and Jay Dean. TRAVEL HAS been another she of Roettas hobbies and pleasures. It has taken her not only over most of the United States, but to Canada, Nassau, Cuba, the Bahamas and Mexico. Her home is filled with momentos of all these places and countries. In the senior citizens program, she has made many beautiful ceramic pieces, which she has given many to others as well as herself. It is characteristic of Roetta that she provided a good home for her aged grandmother for twelve years and showered her with loving care until her death at the age of 95 years. Roetta belongs to the ALonas and Evening Bridge Clubs in Kaysville and evening Literary group and the Salon 151 of 40 8 in Og- den. She supervised and the Kil-foy- conducted vaudeville and plays with Myron Phillips and Albert Barton, her assistants. With these activities, she was the makeup artist. She has acted as judge in school speech contests, beauty and dance contests and poppy contests in the schools. As poppy chairman, she directed veterans in making poppies and helped sell them through the state. And who can forget her as the community Santa Claus. varied her Among interests, she has devoted much enthusiasm and effort to political affairs, acting as vice chairman of Davis ct grandchildren and four great grandsons. Jeans Jeans are still popular with the schooi set for casual wear but there is a tendency among them to wear either dressy pant suits or dresses for more important occasions.
