The two projects were listed as the Turpin Waterfowl Marsh development at Farmington Bay. and the enlargement and rebuilding of the East Park Reservoir dam on the south scopes of the Uinta Mountains near Vernal. Building of the Turpin Marsh will double the waterfowl hunting area of the departments present 4000 acre Farmington Bay Refuge. The lands to be developed by diking, a water distribution system and necessary roads, adjoins the Farmington Bay property to the Bouth and west. Estimated total cost is $160,000.00. The East Park Reservoir dam enlargement will double the present storage capacity and assure a fishery conservation pool of 120 surface acres at the lowest drawn-dow- n point Cost of this multiple use project will approximate $100,000.00. Both projects will be completed during 1960. Department spokesmen said these are the first twoof several capital improvement projects to be awarded during the present biennium which started July 1 this year. Others expected to be completed before June 80, 1961, include major improvements to several of the states twelve fish hatcheries and other properties. The department of fish and game reminded today that the application deadline for elk and moose permits is 12:00 midnight, August 22. Any letters postmarked later than this date and hour will be returned to the sender. Applications for elk permits must be made only in the special envelopes issued for this purpose. They may be obtained at department offices or from license agents over the state. The public drawing for the fourteen elk and two moose hunting units will be conducted at the State Capitol, September 1, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The mourning dove season, first of the upland game bird hunts; will begin September 1, with the whole state being opened to hunting except for parts of Box Elder, Iron, Salt Lake and Utah counties. Surveys conducted by the department of fish and game show a bumper crop of doves at band in most sections of the state. Spokesmen noted that the best dove proor desert range lands. ducing and hunting areas are usually found in the semi-ari- d The annual proclamation covering the mourning dove season will soon be published and reprints of the goerning rules and regulations will be available to the public in about a week. The proclamation lists the changing shooting hours each day, bag limits, closed areas and all other regulatory measures. Our areas in Davis County that boost good dove shooting are fairly limited. Our dry farm areas do provide excellent shooting for scatterguners, however. Care must be taken throughout the area to observe posted areas and the laws concerning this migratory game bird. The dove is regulated by federal law In conjunction without, state laws. This provides some changes in regulations different from our other upland bird laws. Every hunter should have a proclamation and read it thoroughly to be well acquainted with the law. R to attend .
