Show Fage 8 The Sept. 20, 1956 REFLEX Layton National Guardsmen Join Convoy Taking Clothes to Indians Layton A truck load of clothe and seven National Guardsmen from Battery A of the 222nd Field Artillery Battalion left Layton last NaTuesday to join a state-wid- e tional Guard convoy of trucks at Salt Lake carrying' clothing to Piute, Navajo and Hopi Indian families in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. M. Sgt. Edward J. Hansen of the Layton unit led one section of the convoy five trucks to Arizona by way of Kanab, while the second section traveled through Moab, Monticello and Mexican Hat, Utah, to Kayenta, Arizona. Men accompanying Sgt. Hansen from the Layton battery included PFC Fred II. Lee and PFC Barney L. Cooley, Kaysville; PFC Kenneth E. Pilcher, Farmington; PFC Ted L. Cottle, Pvt. Thell Day, and PFC L. Clark Williamson, Layton. They left clothes at Fredonia for the Piutes; Oraibi and Polacca for the Hopi; and Tuba City for the Nav-ajo- s. gathered throughout Utah communities during the recent National Guard sponsored drive was distributed to the Indians. In addition, sugar, flour, soap and canned foods, donated to the project by various businesses in the state, were distributed as prizes for races and games. At a special ceremony in Oriabi, which was attended by Gen. Maxwell E. Rich, Utahs adjutant general, children received candy for prizes. Sgt. Hansen said approximately (1,000 hot dogs were served with coffee during the event. The Guard convoy returned to their home sta- ing tions Saturday.
