Bennett Asks Student Exchange Program Funds WASHINGTON A plea for the Senate to restore $10,000,000 to the State Department appropriation for student exchange funds was voiced here Thursday by Sen. Wallace F. Bennett (R., Utah). The funds previously were pared .in the House version of the bill. In an appearance before the Senate Appropriations Committee, the Utah .lawmaker said the House slice from $22,000,000 to $12,000,-oo- o would "cut the heart out of cultural interchange of ideas. "1 am mindful, as all members of Congress must be, of the need for economy in federal expenditures, but this does not seem to me sound economy, Sen. Bennett said. Few if any of the international undertakings of- - our government have gathered such rich and tangible benefits for our country with such a modest outlay of funds as this educational program. He said that the program had proved during the past 17 years that it had furthered our foreign relations by building a basic understanding of . American ideals 'and way of life among people of other nations. The carefully selected people from other countries who are brought here under the exchange program are the Jeaders or future leaders of their nations. They engage in study, teaching, research and other educational projects which have meaning for their future careers at home and through which they also help us to understand the values and aspirations of their people. They are, moreover, witnesses of our way of life and become the best interpreters of us to their fellow countrymen, he said. Sen. Bennett recalled a series of ROY, UTAH u.s.
