The world has straggled with the question of reclaiming fallen female kind since the Master walked the sod of ancient Palestine and commanded the courtesan by the wayside to go and sin no more. Yet the professed followers of Him have settled it to their own satisfaction that the only way to reclaim unfortunates is to bar the door of egress; inform her that though she repent she will not be forgiven; that though she stain the foot of the cross with tears she is not to be permitted to take her place in the circle which oftentimes makes a hero of her debaucher; that though she breaks away from the scarlet dive there is no place for her in a brighter atmosphere. Such is society of today; such is society in Salt Lake City. JNot so very many weeks ago the residents of one of the fashionable portions of the city rose en masse and entered their protest against the perpetuation of a Rescue Home in their community, alleging that it was tainting the very atmosphere; that their good sons were being decoyed to S long as VOL II; NO. 41. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2. llirt with the inmates through the cracks in tho board fence surrounding the home, thus disturbing their high sense of morality as inculcated at the fireside of their homes. A new location for the Home was finally sought and a buildBut no sooner ing in the eastern part of tho city secured. had tho lease; been made than protests from canting hypocrites by tho score were hurled at the good ladies who wero seeking to carry out the wishes of Him who put a repentant woman on a level with those to whom ho said: I go lienee to prepare a hotter place for you. And tho inevitable result was that in a city, boasting of more church spires, and followers of the Xazerenu than any other city of its size, not a spot could be found on which to locate a homo, a receiving station, where those who, unable longer to bear tho lashings of an avenging conscience, could find a haven of rest, except on Commercial street. To the credit of a Christian minister, Rev. Henry of the First Methodist church, may it be said, that he took up tho matter from the pulpit last Sunday and talked from tho shoulder." A meeting was held Tuesday night and the subject discussed with doubtful results. Thus again the question is' left open. A few really Christian women like can do nothing without Mrs. Paddock and her support. Salt Lake has gone on record as a city to bar tho door against the women who seek salvation in penitential tears. What a magnificent idea to revolve for rellection! Society! behold it as it exists! The man who chisels his way into his neighbor's house and makes away with his gold, may come to be respected; tho forger may live down r his crime, and even the may serve his time in the penitentiary and wash the blood from his hands with a of noble deeds; but the woman who has made a false step has no opportunity to secure admittance through the gate that opens to her a field of equality. Society puts its stamp upon her once a courtesan always a courtesan. True, there are some women of this class who never would reform even though the opportunity were given them, but they form only a moderate percentage. But there are hundreds and thousands every year reclaimed through agencies of Rescue Homes, women who have cjme to a realization of their error and earnestly seek to lead no' A lives. The religion of t! zq obstructionists teaches i at the portals of heaven will lly open at her approach; yei even though sho I taken but one false .. die u, has good enough to t, sweep out their kitchen, to say nothing of resting in seclusion behind separate walls in their community. With these facts in mind one is led to the inevitable conclusion that society needs reforming. And yet that seems a practical impossibility. The next best thing is the Rescue Home a place where the earnestly repentant can be brought in contact with influences thaj inspire that extends a helping hand to one weary of a mis- co-labore- rs ! man-slaye- life-tim- e self-respec- t; |
