And it is believed that he never went into a contest with printers ink more willingly, conscientiously, even cheerfully, than he went into the fight for life or death. It was no surprise that his career terminated as it did, for, with all his brilliancy and honesty of purpose, Brann was unbalanced ; he lacked judgement, he lacked refinement ; and, - while his language was always excellent, his comparisons were often coarse. He was an iconoclast, indeed and so an idol himself, in the eyes of many broken at last by reason of his own strength and weakness. There is no better way to help a paper than to remember its advertisers. The portrait on the cover page this week is that of Hon. C. E. Allen, a well known mining man, lawyer, silverite and statesman of Utah. Friends of The Bee will read its advertisements and keep in mind its patrons. There is a great deal of talk about . And Chinamen, their ways, their prejudice against the institutions of this country, their disposition to accumulate American money with the least possible expenditure thereof en American soil, and to patronize everything Chinese, at least as far as possible. Chinamen are not the only birds of that feather. Some Euro peans are built on the same plan. They like their native land too well to become citizens of this country, but not well enough to stay there. And yet, absence may be, after all, the very strongest proof of patriotic devotion, since a man may leave his country for his countrys good. But there are very nice foreigners who obtain good positions in this country and earn fair salaries, who entertain an unaccountable prejudice against citizenship, and refuse to patronize anything American when they are able to avoid it. A leading electric concern in this city, sometimes called a trust, retains in its employ an Englishman, who may be a nice enough man, but he is intensely English, you know, prefers English ways and men and institutions, earns American dollars, and is willing to spend more of them for something English than for anything American. He says so. He makes no secret of it. xVnd he goes right on earning American gold while his employers talk about men being out of work and boast about their love for home people. cninamen Advertise in The Bee. |
