Her son's fight for life became place. What followed was a year of restoration work that would curdle the blood of the most hardy. They tore out the old and put in new plumbing, gas lines and electric wiring. They released bushels of mouse dung that had accumulated in the walls and ceilings through the many decades. Walls and ceilings were replaced. Exterior walls and framing were adapted for new arched windows. But the straight roof and antique stone foundation withstood their combined attention. A special souvenir of the project was a mouse skeleton found in a Mason jar with a sprig of dill! Brook met and married Jed Harrison during the project and now they live in her "home in progress." She will graduate from Utah State University Uintah Basin Extension this May in accounting. TJ, now 18, will spend his senior year of high school in concurrent enrollment so that he can play and study with the Utah Valley Youth Philharmonic in Provo. The little house had a painting studio and a darkroom for her photography interests. The business "met the bills, she had three beautiful children, the stage was set for 1997. In the spring of 1997, thieves broke into her little shop, grabbed the cash register, and set fire to the building to cover their tracks. Most of the interior, including her paintings and darkroom, was destroyed. A three year insurance battle was to follow. In the winter of 1997, son TJ was struck by a car while riding on a He flew 180-feBoy Scout 50-mil- through the air, and his unprotected head slammed to the ground. There had been too much to do to get ready that morning. His bike helmet had been left at home. Suffering from a fractured skull, severe head trauma and a broken leg, TJ was taken by life flight to Salt Lake City's Primary Children's Hospital. Later, he would spend six months in a wheel chair to protect his head from additional injury should he fall. He suffered permanent ear damage and wears a prosthesis in his ear today. He will have to deal w ith short term memory loss for the rest of his life. It took about a year to feel that he was "recovered." That was the year that Lori learned perspective in her life. She everything. What was the hardest part of 1997 to deal with? Lori's response is quiet, and still heartfelt. "Not having my Dad there to help me through all of this." He had died 20 years earlier. Her business was rebuilt and added upon with the help of many friends. Its interior now has no photo lab. Her treasured Valoy d paintings had been destroyed in the fire.. .her other artwork badly damaged. The new interior, as the one destroyed, showed the touch of an artist's hand and the eye of a builder. In 2001, Lori began pointing out an old, run down house near their home to her daughter Brook. It was for sale at a good price, and Lori's building juices were starting to flow once more. She told Brook, "That roof s pretty straight!" A carefully researched observation considering the shambles the rest of the structure was Eaton-inspire- experiencing. It took Lori about six months to get her daughter "psyched up" for the project, but in the end she prevailed and Brook purchased the NOW STYLING LOOK. tJVLOJZ - CIO Watt J--f Cslr. tls, tWlenras j To V i , j u - 4 $4 fee '' v'V' '"" My d f i Htrj dry. This gives livestock producers a rare second chance. NAP applies only to losses that exceed 50 per cent. The insurance costs $100 per crop per county, a small fee that may yield good dividends for many livestock producers. Given the drought and budget cuts in other areas, this may be one of the few ways a rancher can be compensated for losses that may occur as a result of reduced grazing on Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service or state lands. Those who have not already signed up may consider doing so. Interested ranchers may sign up or ask questions about NAP by contacting the Farm Service Agency in Vernal at 789-- 7 33 ext. 4. Ranchers may still buy crop insurance to cover losses of forage in pastures and rangelands due to drought and other conditions, according to Boyd Kitchen, Utah State University Extension agent. The program is called NAP and is available through the Farm Service Agency of the United States Department of Agriculture. NAP pays on losses on private land as well as federal and state lands grazed by permit. Last year, about $400,000 was paid out in Uintah County for losses due to drought on grazing land.
