Bowen Seeks Election To School Board Ray J. Bowen, Mine Engineer, Coal Mines and Quarries, Colum-bia-GeneDivision, U. S. Steel va Corporation, had filed his candidacy for election to the Carbon County Board of Education, as a representative of the Eastj Car- bon District. This election will take place on November 5, and voting .will be done in the regular polling places of Dragerton, Sunnyside. and Columbia. Mr. Bowen for fifteen years a resident pf the East Carbon area, came to Columbia in the spring of 1942 as mine engineer. Sjnce that time, he has lived and worked in East Carbon. Active in the affairs of his church and the community as a whole, Mr. Bowen is a of the East Carbon Rotary club, and of the East Carbon t-Teacher Association. A year ago, Mr. Bowens was the first voice raised in the campaign which resulted in a promise by the School Board to construct the East Carbon High School. Funds for this project are to be provided from a bond issuer passed by the voters of the county last February. Mr. Bowen was bom 'in Spanish Fork, Utah, in 1907, was educated in the public schools there; he attended the B. Y. U. in Provo and received his B. The first activity in the coming school Board race in the Carbon county school district was evidenced this week with the filing of candidacy by Don Ross, incumbent representative from District 5 which comprises the East Carbon area Dragerton, Sunnyside and Columbia. This is the only representative district which comes up for election this year., Mr. Ross, now serving as president of the board of education, is term completing his first five-yeon the board. 'Die deadline for filings for this office is this Saturday at 12 noon at the office of the Carbon County clerk. The election, along with the Municipal election, will be November 5. . ar : I- - ' K , A DON ROSS District. Second, to promote better discipline in and around the schools, and better protection of school property. Third, to improve the maintenance of school buildings, equip- -, ment and school grounds ' Fourth, to promote more public" interest and participation in the schools and in school problems, activities and affairs. The Board of Education is an agency of the people of Carbon County, Mr. Bowen stated,' and its business is the business of every citizen in the county. The people have a right to be kept informed of the problems and activities of the School Board, and the advice and counsel of the public should be sought and heeded by the Board. Mr. Bowen hopes that every eligible voter in the East Carbon district will vote on November 5 to express his choice for the Board of Education. .ywV'v u f e School Board Member J J. " f RAY The Sunnyside mines, Kaiser Steel Corporation, first aid team placed second in the state championship first aid contest held at the Utah State Fair grounds September 18. Teams from the major mines and industrial plants in the state participated and provided close competition. The following teams participated and are shown with the number of points won in the competi- tion: Bingham Mines, Kennecott Copper Corporation, 1,484 points; Sunnyside Mines, Kaiser Steel Corporation, 1,480 points ; Geneva Mines, United States Steel Corporation, 1,479 points; Columbia Mines, United States Steel Corporation, 1,479 points; Columbia Smelter, American Smelting and Refining Company, 1,476 points; Garfield Refinery, Kennecott Copper Corporation, 1,476 points; Geneva Steel Works, U. Gilbert, 124 Denver Ave. Dragerton, Utah, will observe their Golden Wedding "Anniversary, Sunday, October 20th from 2 to 5 p.m. with an open house for relatives and friends. All of their children are expected to be present. The Gilberts were married October 17th, 1907, in Girarcf, Kansas; They moved to Utah in 1949 after living most of their lives in . the Mulberry' and Pittsburg,, Kansas, area. Mr. Gilbert was bom in Parker, South Dakota, November 24, Mrs. Gilbert was bom in Belmore, Ohio, .October 13, 1890. The couple have, two sons, Charles Gilbert and James E. Gilbert, Jr., Chicago, Illinois; three daughters, Mrs. Lois Hall, Mrs. Lorene Cassett and Mrs. Shirley Meikel, all of - Dragerton. They have nine grandchildren and one ; great grandchild. 1885. |
