Show ! ( Tuesday, October 23, 1956 THE DRAGERTON TRIBUNE Policing People Into, Perfect Happiness Those who have been attracted by the idea of a government, providing cradle-to-grasecurity for all, would do well to read and reread this paragraph from one of Dorothy Thompsons columns : "There is no way pf creating and maintaining a perfect' society without, first, imposing upon its members an ideal of perfection, and then getting rid of all who do not share that ideal or fail to cooperate for its fulfillment. All utopias must, in logic, be police states, policing people into perfect happiness. Policemen with dubs and pistols, policemen licensing this and forbidding that, psychological policemen, using more ve subtle and devastating methods to keep people from getting ideas into their heads. In this, Miss Thompson has brilliantly and briefly provided the reason why socialism and its variants always destroy individual liberty and always must. This is not to say, of course, that all socialists are bent on dictatorship. Some of them, such as Norman Thomas, are men of the highest principle, dedicated to human freedom and justice. But men of this stamp are few and far between, and in th pjwer state control soon passes into the hands of the ruthlessly ambitious and to the fanatics who, at any cost, are determined to make man over in some imageo of their own devising. There is no room in that state for those wh. do not. fit this image. For the dis- - I j I senter, there can only be the firing squad or the slave labor camp. To end on a lighter note, some time ago a story made the rounds concerning an agitator addressing X a London crowd. Among other things, he promised that, come the Revolution, all workers would ride in A Cockney spoke said he and want to ride didnt up U(E RoPs-Royce- s. in a The agitator glared at him and answered, Come the Revolution, youll ride e whether you like ip a Rolls-Royc- UBmlket flBamrafjmm e. n 6Ti all Rolls-Royc- ifor not.
