Show Tuesday, August 21, THE DRAGERTON TRIBUNE Page Two Hunting Instructions For juveniles Danner Waterfowl Hunting Season Predicted Only a normal incident of botulism has appeared to date this year on Utahs waterfowl marshes, the department of fish and game said today. Commonly known as western duck sickness, the botulism toxin usually begins to take its toll of ducks and some shorebirds in ear- ly August during those years when heavy losses have occurred. The department said a dose watch is being maintained on the marshlands, with ample equipment and serum on hand to reach and treat sick birds as the disease may strike. The equipment indudes three airboatas with trained crews to man them. Ducks afflicted with the disease usually recover if reached and inn jected in time with the necesserum. The airboats are a sity in traveling over the muddy and shallow water reaches of the marshes. Botulism occurs in the Great Salt Lake and Utah Lake marshes to a greater or lessor degree each late summer and fall period. It is known that the bacteria is present in the marshes at tall times, though it becomes active and produces poisonous toxin only during the current period. Losses have been greatly reduced through the use of serum and the trained personnel and airboats, as well as through the present knowledge of wataer manipulation on the marshes. A comparatively high botulism loss occurred during 1955 when a total of 40,000 birds fell prey to the disease. It was noted that this loss was not considered serious in anti-toxi- the light of the fact that emservice, attending school, or' who ployed in the federal service, have not established residency in other state.
