Show & mm Jm i7r Carbon: Serving the Mining Area of East Volume 7.000 population $900,000 monthly payroll. 1954 DRAGERTON, CARBON COUNTY, UTAH, TUESDAY, APRIL 6, 7 You Are American in the American the Americarr plan, the And .believe way American tradition. You are also free to do about as you please. This freedom allows you to get into your car and race to a fire or walk if you prefer. Please do not race to the scene of a fire. Forego this one Ameriand this is the can privelege fire reason: The department is completely organized and fully staffed and you cannot be of any help. You may be very much in the way and conceivably you could get hurt. During a recent fire in a trailer house in West Dragerton a woman was burned badly. So many cars were parked in the area it was impossible to rush her to the hospital. The men who man our fire departments are well trained and competent. Lets give them a chance to perform their important work efficiently. Lets not hamper them by overcrowding the area in which they work. is t Five Carbon Youflls Five Carbon county youths received notices last week to report physical for army examinations, it was announced by Otto C. McKinnon, clerk of the Carbon county Selective Service board. Those called for examinations are Robert E. Olsen, Helper; William Ed Cowan, Dragerton (now of Brigham City); Eddie Eliu Valasquez, Dragerton, and Guy McAlister, Dragerton. pre-inducti- on pre-inducti- on A Community Band Now a Possibility A community band is a possi- bility for East Carbon if the plans of Harold Hanson and Clifford Jensen materialize. This project is certainly one that is worth the consideration and support of everyone in this area. Those who play an instrument and those who do not. We all love a parade! And what is a parade without a band? Here is a project where father and son, mother and daughter, or E. the entire family could pool their musical ability for the enjoyment C. 14 Pony League The East Carbon Pony League held its second meeting Saturday,' April 2, in - the Dragerton school There was a satisfactory turnout of adults as well as prospective Pony League players. A film showing last years Pony League world series was shown. A number of men volunteered to manage the teams and act as umpires. League officials will meet soon and choose the- - managers from the list of volunteers. Mike Gabriella, Gene Pressett and Elmer Stultz are in charge of field repairs. The field will be put into shape during the next of all. This band could appear at important baseball games throughout the year; at gatherings such as we have on Labor Day and once or twice a month It could give an outdoor concert. The possibilities are as limitless as music itself. Those interested in the foundation of this community band meet at the Dragerton school house April 9, at 7 p.m. ' two weeks. : Parents permission slips vvAre passed out to all the boys pres? ent. For those boys not at the meeting they may secure these slips from Joe Merchant, 159 Whitmore Drive, Dragerton; Joe S. Yelonek, 216 Rawlins, Drager- ton; Sam Fratto, Sr., Columbia, or Doug Tollis, Sunnyside. The permission slips should be filled out immediately bythe parents and returned' to one of the league officials. Birth or baptismal certificates should be brought by the player when he brings his permission slip. Book Cliff Club At the Sunnydale library Tues-- 1 day, March 23, the Fine Arts I committee of the Book Cliff Club gave a very lovely program. Presi- dent Bessie Jumper called the meeting to order, and turned the ) program over to Glenna Hanson, I chairman on fine arts. She intro duced the Kitchen Rythmetts of d and Price, a ! unique band. This is an ! band, directed by Edith Baird, and I the instruments consist of everything or anything found in a kitchen such as wash tubs, wash boards, pancake turners, funnels, lids, skillets, etc. After several numbers were beautifully played, Mrs. Digm of Price was introduced and gave two lovely readings entitled Finding a Mouse, and The Persian Kit, Number Per Copy 5c 4-- H Enrollment Enrollment in the program in Carbon county has reached 268 members in 40 clubs, as of March 31, according to Home Demonstration Agent Ruth E. Brasher and County Agricultural Agent Robert L. Hassell. This is considerably above last years figure at this time of the year, and it appears that the goal of 700 set by the Club LeadCarbon County ers Association may be reached. Many clubs do not actually become enrolled and start project work until school is out. However, it is felt by the agents that clubs should enroll early and have their project work well under way by the time school is out, in order to prevent cramming at the end of the season. Two schools to train leaders in club work will be held in the county in April, one in the East Carbon area on the 16th, and one in Price on the 17th. These schools will be set up on recommendaclub leaders tions from the leaders who and those association, leaderattended the state ship school in Logah the last of February will assist. County Agents Hassell and Brasher urge boys and girls to get their dubs organized before these schools are held so that their leaders may take advantage of these schools.
