In answer to a request from Lederle Laboratories, U students are sending soil samples from various parts of Utah to the New York laboratories for testing. Aureomycon, one of the new miracle antibiotics, was obtained by similar testing of tens of thousands of samples of Missouri soil. The search that resulted in the development of aureomycin was led by Dr. Benjamin M. Dugger, a former botany professor, at the age of 71. Penicillin was being produced by a large mold, and Dr. Duggar believed that the smaller molds from soil samples might produce an even better antibiotic. For three years, Dr. Duggar and his staff cultured soil samples with disappointing results until the lucky day when a particular sample of Missouri soil produced an interd mold. Test esting tube experiments were begun, and the results indicated that the new mold would combat growth of several kinds of germs. World-wid- e clinical tests followed, and aureomycin is now prescribed for more than a dozen different kinds of infectious dis- For A STRONG AMERICA For A PIECES if golden-colore- eases.
