Coal handling in the Horse Canyon mine of the Geneva Steel company is engineered on a basis of a smooth flow of coal, always moving in a direct course from the actual face to the rail cars in which it is to be shipped to the coke ovens and steel plant at Provo. This is accomplished by the use of nearly a mile of belt conveyors, between the mouth of the mine and the blending bins at the rail car loading point. This mine, said to be the largest coal mine west of the Mississippi river, is also the most modern in the country. Opened in 1942, by the Defense Plant Corporation, the mine was operated on one level, and the coal was mostly handled with shaker conveyors, there being 36 in use at that time, and each one was complemented with belt and chain conveyors. As the mine expanded, to a second level and now a third level has been added to the workings, haulage distances have been lengthened, requiring additional equipment. So far, It) more shaker units have been added, each consisting of a complete shaker conveyor, a short wall cutting machine, and one post mounted drill. The estimated daily capacity of each unit is approximately 56 tons per shift. , i 4 COUNTY-WID- E MAY 7 AIID8 COAL HANDLED WITH SHAKER CONVEYORS r T T 4 1 T ti'" v w. The work stoppage that has tied up all production, as well as a stoppage of paydays, lasted for 36 days, and came to an end on Wednesday morning last, April 21. after a wire had been received by the mine union officials from their leader, John L. Lewis, which stated, I do hope you will convey to each member my wish that he immediately return to work. Even though this wire arrived late in the afternoon, and evening was well advanced before most of the miners could be contacted, every mine in this district reported a very good force on duty Wednesday morning. Even this was bettered for the afternoon shift, and by Thursday morning, full production was under way. Reports from most every mine in the district are that the tonnage produced on the first day of return to work this time was greater than the first day after any previous work stoppage Coal trains were on their way to the customers, as well as Ip the steel mill by Thursday, anct these have been moving steadily ever since. During the week, rumors, evidently unfounded, were spread that another work stoppage might result from action in federal court Friday, but with the ruling which imposed no further penalty on either John L. Lewis or the mine union, the miners are expected to remain on the job. Kiddies' Matinee. Saturday, 1:00 P. M.
