Show 20$ m Volume 1 Number 29 jjanuary 27 , 1984 Cisco rr N Kid Runs Again v Jigging Off Sweetwater by Bill Peterson The south side of Bear Lake had the first fishable ice this year, leaving a lot of blue water to the north. Now if you are like me, and have an itching to get out and try some fishing, you dont need ice all around. My advice: be careful! On January 5th I was on the ice out to about 60 feet of water nearly a third of a mile from shore. The ice was about VA inches thick. It was easy to cut holes and the fish were biting. In about two hours we had our limits, two cutthroat over five pounds, two from two to three pounds and one under sixteen inches, plus some white fish. I was using a silver Kastmaster, and my partner a white jig. The white jig seemed to be best, or else he hooked them better than I could that day. (White jigs available at the Pickleville Store). All the other fisherman we say, and there were quite a few, had fish and a number of them their limits. We came out later in the day than most, and were last to leave the ice. While we were fishing the wind came up as usual. This was no problem as we were dressed warmly, except that when we started back we found the piece of ice we were fishing from had broken off from the main body and there was five feet of blue water between us and the main ice. The ice we were on had moved south We made a lightning and east. detour of about 200 yards to get where the ice float was still touching the rigid ice body, and got back to shore safely. Fortunately the wind didnt shift and blow from the south, or we might have spent a long cold night on the lake! Bryce Nielson, Utah Fish & Wildlife Representative estimated there were over 1,000 fisherman on the lake over the weekend. This is the largest number of fisherman for any weekend during the preceding year. The only day coming close was last Labor Day. The last year there was ice on the lake for the Cisco rua was 1978. Nielson reported creel census showed a good catch, with many limits of cisco, especially from those getting out early in the day. |
